Early Action deadline is October 15. The very first SAT date for this fall 2016 is scheduled for October 1. The old SAT used to take only about 2-3 weeks for the scores to come out, but the new SAT has been taking well over a month for the scores. For example, the upcoming June 4 SAT scores will not come out until July 21. If our children take the October 1 SAT, can it still count for EA (assuming the scores come out in November) or will this June SAT be the last one that could count for EA? In other words, do they always count the SAT scores as long as it was taken before the deadline (and we could possibly let the AO know its on its way) or do only the scores obtained before the deadline count?

If we think that the October SAT score could significantly improve from June SAT, is it better to play it safe and apply Regular in case the scores don't reach in time to be reviewed? (We've read that EA has much better chance but...) Is anyone else planning to apply EA taking the October SAT, or is everyone done with SAT's already? This new SAT business is giving us such a dilemma.....

This is our second time around (still waitlisted for 2020 but making plans for 2021), and we ran into a similar situation last year. From everything we've learned, you WANT to apply EA.

My humble advice would be to do the June SAT even if your DS/DD doesn't get the absolute best score in the world, then use the October SAT to superscore. Last year's EA appointments weren't offered until mid-November, and the CGA is more than willing to take updated information. Certainly your DS/DD won't be the only person reporting scores from October. Taking the test in June completes the application so he/she qualifies for EA, but your DS/DD has the summer to prepare for a whiz-bang score in October.

Also, even though the ACT doesn't have the writing component, your DS/DD could take the June 11 or September 10 ACT - a good ACT score would likely make the CGA see him/her as worth waiting for the October SAT score to be reported. My DD actually did much better on her ACT than her SAT but has had conflicts with the subsequent test dates. I believe her ACT score (validating her GPA) is what got her on the waitlist, so ANY good test score to validate high school GPA is worth reporting.

Good luck with it all!! Exciting times ahead!!

Waitlisted STILL! Boy, that must be tough not knowing. I wish you luck too!

Thank you for your insight and advice. We were hoping that our DD could be done with her SAT's with the old one, but her score was just satisfactory, not great. She COULD possibly get away with just turning in her current scores, but we have no idea how much competition there will be this year. After debating over it, she just started studying for the new SAT all over again after all her AP exams and finals, so she literally has one week to prepare for the June SAT. That's why we're sort of counting on this summer to improve by October, really hoping it'll count. I'm sure everyone's familiar with the story. If she prepares for the new SAT, I'm not sure if she'll have a chance to prepare for ACT separately. Are they similar enough for her to do well without preparing specifically for ACT? Most people around where we live only take SAT, so we haven't even given ACT a thought.

By the way, off subject, is everyone else taking the optional essay portion for the new SAT also? We registered for it just to be safe because CGA hasn't given an official word about the optional essay yet.

Take the SAT in October. Until the CCEB reviews the application, Admissions will accept additional data, as long as the candidate has submitted his or her portion on time.
