My son's status for Kings Point is "Application on File". He has completed all the pre-requisites (DODMERB, CFA, Nomination, etc.), but scored below the minimum for his verbal SAT scores (520). He got 590 on his math. His school grades and activities are very good. Does his low verbal mean he will absolutely not be considered? What does it take for him to get offered a spot at the prep school (NMMI)?

Kp93, I cannot answer your direct question. However I wonder if your DS has taken the ACT test as well? Some students score better on the SAT and some on the ACT. The academy does convert ACT and SAT scores with an equiviancy chart of some sort. I remember searching for it over and over and plugging those numbers trying to guess what was good enough. :

Setting the SAT test aside as I understand it KP admissions works on a whole person score. What an applicant does day in and day out may hold more sway that one category on one test style. Have your DS keep pushing to achieve items he can update his file with. His first semester grades, an athletic award or accolade of a personal best performance in some area. Maybe a community achievement of some sort or something that demonstrates you son's leadership abilities etc.
Have DS call his admissions rep at the academy and ask what more he can do or provide. If there is a coach or athletic department he has worked with or a sport or program he is interested in being a part of? Have him call them himself on his behalf if that seems appropriate. Does DS have a job or activity outside of school that requires much of his time and commitment? If so, is that reflected well in his application package? Feel free to private message regular posters and ask their advice or experience with specifics. They wouldn't be here if they didn't want be of assistance. The jokes around here aren't that good lately and we have had no real popcorn-munching-entertaining -infighting to watch........oops, maybe that is just me  Anyway,

Good luck and keep working at it. Don't forget to keep plugging away at plan B as well. My DS got so focussed on KP I was always afraid he didn't have a net.
Have a net.:thumb:

Someone will come along and be able to be more specific on your question

Thanks for the response. Yes, he has taken the ACT and is 1 below on that test also. Thanks for the advice. He recently was named Captain of the wrestling team, I will tell him to update with admissions! Thanks again.

My DS was told (by a letter) that he wouldn't be considered until he met the minimums. He was 10 below on his SAT in September. He has since well exceeded the minimum and he received an email about the fact that he increased his score. Hope this helps. Maybe your DS could call admissions and ask them.

test score

KP93, t&omom is right- maybe sign up and take it again asap and rush the results!
My DS barely didn't meet the requirement for Math on his SAT but he exceeded it on the ACT. They were able to take the ACT score and convert it somehow so that they said it met the requirement of the SAT of 600.
Honestly, it's going to all come down to what state you are from, the competition in your state, and probably whether that test grade can be raised and if there's enough time to do that. Also, I believe (??) an offer for the Prep School comes via mail. Best of luck to you.
