Scholarship Moratorium

And despite the "cutbacks" in scholarships, she is telling me that her unit (public school) has significantly increased in size this year (based upon enrollment in ROTC classes).

This has been reported from more than one source. Anyone have an idea about the surge in ROTC enrollment? Is it because of the job prospects after graduation, coupled with the announced draw-downs in AE and IQ by 2014?

And I too will ask Clarkson how's the hockey looking this year and whether he has gotten a player in his battalion yet. As to the scholarship cutbacks/realignments, I imagine it will affect his Clarkson population, but will probably be offset by increased numbers at his SUNY Potsdam campus across the bridge.:thumb:

GO POTSDAM! (a Potsdam alumnus living in NC with the license plate DUMBYANK).

I certainly don't have any numbers, but I know Univ. South Carolina has their biggest freshman NROTC class ever (even after the drop-outs from orientation). I know in my DS's case its that he's wanted to be a Marine for the longest time and has nothing to do with the economy (he still doesn't think THAT far ahead).

I wonder how much it might have to do with 9-11 occuring in their formative years. How old were they, 8? or thereabouts?

DS has heard there is a jump in AROTC at his school also. The sections of MSI are full(his section is all scholarship and SMP cadets, the other sections are for general interest students). Will have to see if this years scholarship/SMP drops by 50% like it has in previous years(40 or so start, 20 or so by second grading period).

I have also figured that DS's desire to serve started with 9/11. Yes, they all would have been around 8 years old, 3rd grade, and DS has confirmed that the images of 9/11 have always been in his mind - partly because his Dad is a fireman and partly because of the assault on his country.

The fact that he's been a civil war living historian since around this time also sealed the deal that he'd want to serve. Yep, Cincinnati, OH has a unit of CONFEDERATE Marine re-enactors:eek: cannons and muzzle loaders, black powder and historically correct living conditions. Not my cup of tea, but he's been doing this with his Grandmother since 2nd grade(powder monkey for those in the know)

I think I was in 6th or 7th grade when 9/11 happened. It gave me motivation to try and enlist after high school. I was talked out of it by my (Vietnam era) parents and decided to do the college route instead. Had a chance to do some training on the active duty side (combat arms specifically) while in ROTC and I am very happy I went the college route. After that experience I didn't want college to end...haha

Well, if non-scholarship students are falling over themselves this year to sign up for ROTC, then it doesn't seem that CC will feel the need to throw a ton of money at scholarships in order to meet its recruiting goals. This, it would seem, does not bode well for this year's scholarship applicants. Am I wrong?

(Pima, another element in your "perfect storm"?)

I had the same discussion many, many times with my DS about direct enlisting from high school vs ROTC. I hope he is as pleased and sucessful as you have been with the program. It is helpful(and very insightful)to have your input on the boards. Regardless of the 2016 craziness with the boards, many parents will appreciate your time and thoughts!!

Recruiting for the Ohio Guard is 200%, Tuition assistance still available, but not the right option for everyone. Those in NEED of the financial support of scholarships to obtain their dream schools will need a reality check and a whole lot of backup plans. Never thought we'd use Plan E, SMP/Guard, but in light of reality(down sized, over retention AD Army) DS is very aware that being an officer in the guard may be his future.

The perfect storm may be upon them, but those who chase storms or at least don't run from them may still get where they want to go.

regarding several observations that there are a lot of non scholarship freshmen cadets, my son also reported that there are 10 non scholarship cadets for each scholarship cadet (including 3 year ADs).

been a busy week, and I didn't catch the request for a North Country Hockey update. Program is still strong in the Golden Knight Battalion. Same trend as others...less scholarships, but surprising number of cadets without scholarships enrolled. Had an unusual number of applicants who didn't receive an offer still chose to come to Clarkskon. Have a couple promising hockey prospects, including my second Canadian (dual citizen) and a couple young ladies. Can't wait to get on the ice and see what they've got.

Hope goaliegirl is ready for another season and things are going well.

Glad to hear that your program is attracting cadets who are at Clarkson first and then in your battallion, regardless of the scholarship status. Have their priorities straight.

Doubly glad to hear that you have hockey prospects in your program. I guess the NCAA wasn't too thrilled with the Canadian Scholarship program at Potsdam last spring, so hopefully ROTC will be a draw for American hockey prospects to replace the Canadians affected by the scholarship changes necessary to keep the NCAA happy.

Goaliegirl sounds very happy to be back at school. Got to work a volleyball game yesterday with some hockey teammates followed by some lifting. Got an invite to workout with an ROTC buddy today at dinner last night. Sounds like her dedication to the summer lifting program has paid off and she has plenty of opportunities to keep in top shape.

I think pre-season ice (captain's practices) start next week and I guess once again they overlap with ROTC PT on MWF (hockey starts earlier but finishes too late to join ROTC). Team lifts will likely be on TuTh and if she follows last year's pattern, she will lift once on the weekend as well during preseason.

I think she is more aware that she has to balance out the workout (including running) to address both hockey and ROTC APFT priorities. Her run times are better this summer than they were last year, so hopefully that trend continues. They don't do a lot of distance running training for hockey (they tend to focus on interval stuff), so it is on her to fit that in.

Classes start Tuesday - first up ROTC lab.

Update

Just thought I'd update everyone on the status of campus-based scholarships, at least at DS's school. If you recall, for reasons only known to him, my son did not apply for a 4-year scholarship in high school, despite pretty good stats (3.9 GPA / 34 ACT). He then decided firmly in the spring that he wants to do ROTC.

His intention was to show up and compete for a campus-based scholarship - the cadre had him fill out all his paperwork and go through the Dodmerb process last spring. He is medically qualified.

He went to ROTC orientation the week before school started and apparently made a good showing, and then scored 283 on his first PT test last week.

He was informed today that he is being given a 4-yr scholarship effective this semester, and will be contracting within the week. I believe it is a scholarship that went unused at his battalion - i.e. someone didn't show up, but I'm not 100% certain. I do not know if other non-scholarship cadets in his battalion received anything.

So, for what it's worth, his story has a happy ending. Or, more correctly, a happy beginning! I hope other cadets who are waiting to hear get similar good news.

As someone who is in their second year of waiting, I am very happy that you have had this positive turn of events.

that's great news Jcc . Is the school Private or Public?

I think you actually meant to direct that question to me dunninla, but it is a public university. The ROTC dept is already paying his room and board -obviously I'm hoping that continues, but we'll deal with it however it works out.
