Scholarship suspension question

DS's paperwork stated he must carry a minimum of 12 hrs per semester to maintain scholarship.

BTW, AROTC stipend is paid thruout the summer months unless they get paid thru some other training or Army progm (LDAC, CULP). DS went to air assault an since it was only 2 weeks he did not get Army training pay but continued to receive his stipend all summer until he went to LDAC.

I believe the reason your son received the stipend over the summer as a rising sophomore is because he is in ECP. Since these cadets attend LDAC after their first year they receive the summer stipend (except when they are at training).

Cadets in standard AROTC programs do not receive the stipend over the summers following their freshman and sophomore years.

I would agree with Bull and Jcleppe.

DS was an MSIII his freshman yr so that puts him in the category that Bull refers to. I should have specified that on my first post.

DS just completed his MSI year and did NOT receive a stipend over the summer and was told he would not.

Now that we have that settled maybe Clarkson or bama can answer the question how AROTC views an academic year?

It would probably be the best assistance to the OP. If it is the traditional academic school year, Sept- May than it would appear that no matter what grade they received this summer will not matter because the academic year ended in May and their scholarship will be revoked.

If they see it as a fiscal year, than it is a different ball of wax.

My guess is because the ball is already rolling with their Commanders and has been told that there are options on the table, but AROTC has the final say in the matter, that they see it as May as the end of the academic year.

Thus it goes back to what I keep saying they need to just hold tight and wait for the results. Hope that the best results will be paying out of pocket for this semester, but be prepared for the worst, which can mean disenrollment and pay back of the scholarship. Sorry, but academically he broke the contract and they have the right to go after the money. In the bowels of this forum is a thread started by gojira, @ 21 months ago. If an attorney is needed, she is the only one on this board that can give you true insight on how that process works. She rarely posts, but you maybe able to send her a pm via this site. I do know it took months for the decision to come down and it went all the way up to the Sec. Of Navy. They were able to get the $143k paid back over ten years instead of the original 4 that the Navy requested.

Yea, the reason I added that part in was because it will differ based on being a basic course (MS1/2) or advanced course (MS3/4). Apparently the system they use for stipends (DFAS and whatever else is involved) doesn't take advanced course cadets out of the pay system during the summer.

If he's gotten both stipend and the summer training pay, tell him to hold off on spending the stipend until he sees what happens to it. They're good about getting money back

my son's AROTC scholarship suspension. It has been difficult getting details as the suspension is under review for a medical clearance from an injury that originated as a misdiagnosed broken ankle that occurred during a CULP trip last summer. This led to some academic issues in the spring semester although he is back on track after surgery and summer classes. My son was told that there are multiple options that could occur and he would be faced with one of these options with no decision allowed on his part. One of these possible options would be having to report immediately to active duty.
I don't know how to help because I'm not sure after reading these three pages what exactly your son's status is. I would ask him via email or phone:

1. Are you on suspension, or are you in the process of being disenrolled, or both?

2. Is the suspension or disenrollment or both for medical reasons, or for falling below 12 units Spring semester?

3. The "options" you mentioned... are those for his current situation, or a warning of what will be his options should he fail to come off suspension?

So now I'm just confused. Should MSIII's receive their stipend thruout the summer? I understand they shouldn't receive both stipend and training pay for the same time period, which he did not.

MSIII rising to MSIV should get a stipend over the summer, not rising MSIIIs since they will not officially be a POC until they return in the fall.

ETA: I was not paying attention.

After re-reading the OP's info, I suspect the suspension was for failing to complete 12 credit hours (due to the withdrawal).

I can't imagine the PMS signed off on the withdrawal - perhaps BAMA ROTC can confirm that this is SOP. Cadet probably did not realize the ramifications of his action. If scholarship was paid before withdrawal, there could be some serious financial payback issues.

Perhaps we will get some more clarification from the OP...

It sounds like your Cadet has been placed on leave of absence pending disenrollment. The options you refer to are normal. It has been my experience that the Gov. wants the money more than they want an indentured Soldier.

Goaliedad,

I would highly doubt that they didn't inform the cadet that if he goes below 12 credits he will lose his scholarship. Additionally, every cadet signs that paper stating they will carry no less thaan 12 credits. Cadets, at least at my DS's det were counseled every semester regarding their academic progression. It was not if they signed the paper on their 1st day of MSI and never discussed the need to maintain a 2.5 and more than 12 credits again

I know that for my DS he had enough credits to graduate a semester early, but needed to wait to finish ROTC. He took 12 credits in the spring bc otherwise he would lose the scholarship. His COC was one person that he discussed his schedule with prior to creating it.

I also agree with Bama the military does not like to have indentured servants it doesn't usually make for good morale, especially when the servant was training for years to be the boss only a few months earlier.

Yes, MS3's will receive the stipend, but only because the way the system is set up, it doesn't take out MS3's and MS4's for the summer months. They can't get both the stipend and training pay at the same time, as you said, so he'll probably see some taken away (if it wasn't already) to make up for the days he was receiving both. Sorry if I wasn't clear, it can get confusing.

Sometimes cadets do things without talking to the cadre.

And sometimes they don't process correctly everything the cadre say about keeping 12 hours (misinterpreting it to be 12 credit hours the first day of class).

My daughter also was ahead on credits and had to take 12 her last term just to keep in good standing.

At this point, though there is only speculation until we get further update.

update

My son met with his new PMS last week and it went very well. He is currently on leave of absence pending medical clearance. All of the medical information has been sent in and his doctor's opinion that he will have a complete recovery along with the fact that he has been running regularly gives him high hopes for clearance. Meanwhile, my son reported that his PMS was very encouraging and told my son that as long as he keeps his grades up he should be able to be back in for the second semester. The fact that he took classes over the summer and did very well helped him a lot. He is an engineering major, that may also have been a helpful factor. He did have to miss LDAC this summer, so he will have to make that up somehow depending on what happens with LDAC in the future.

svincent207,

Great that it seems to be working out. Don't sweat missing LDAC. He can make it up next summer if necessary. If he has completed his degree and ROTC requirements he would likely be an end of camp commisionee next summer--whichever camp they choose to call it.

When he is released for full activity with no restrictions by his doctor, provide the documentation to the ROTC Cadre. Ensure all the surgical notes and followup care are documented. My now LT had to drive to the Dr's office numerous times to get more records and additional statements acceptable for the medical review by the ROTC/Cadet Command 'surgeon'.

Great to hear about your DS. I wish him a speedy return. As for LDAC, I have had a chance to speak with my DS face to face and seems he ain't missed a thing. Hopefully next years LDAC will be better for him....
