Hi,

I'm new to the Service Academy forums so please keep that in mind if I miss something painfully obvious, but I recently received my LOA to West Point and I'm really excited. I'm almost sure I'll go but I still need to give it some thought.

My question is if I receive a scholarship from another area like my high school's alumni association what happens with it? Because there is no tuition at my potential school would I forfeit it or would I get to keep it and use it personally?

This isn't a make or break question (obviously I hope) I just was curious and was not sure of the answer... Thanks in advance!

Depends on the nature of the scholarship.

Some of my friends received scholarships where they were essentially "blank checks"; they could use them for anything.

The ones I had received were specific in regards to what I could use it for.

Like Ken said, it depends on the scholarship. Some are specific (tuition only, etc.), while others may be for general education expenses (like textbooks). If the scholarship you recieve is not specifically for tuition, you should be able to use it to pay for your books, computer, or part of your initial deposit.

check with the people giving you the scholarship. Even if it is currently specific, they may open it up for you if you explain it to them.
