Second AFROTC Board results

I am not AFROTC affiliated, but in case the subject comes up with those around me, I'd like to better understand that conversion...

In our case, suppose an AFROTC Type 7 is awarded. We are in California. The tuition+fees at UCLA are about $13,000.

Does this mean that a California based AFROTC Type 7 awardee may convert to Type 2, and then get $13,000 for years 2,3, 4 at, say Occidental College (Private, tuition about $41,000)?

If I understand your question correctly you could convert to type 2 and use at Occidental and get $18,000/yr for years 2,3 and 4.
At UCLA you would keep your type 7 and get $13,000/yr for yrs 1,2,3,4.

If you met the board but you did not receive a scholarship, are you eligible to meet the next board/s or is that the end of the line?
As I understand it, you will be rolled over to the next board and could receive a scholarship then. It is not over until the conclusion of the final board.

Type 7 converts to $18K/year for 3 years

Dunninla, just went through the decision making process on this in December. My DD's Type 7 choices were:

4 years of instate tuition, has to be at a public school. She actually could have taken the Type 7 to Texas A&M as they would have charged her instate tuition that was less than we'd pay in our home state. (Not too many of those schools.)

-OR-

3 years of tuition at any school at $18K/year.

Once the scholarship is activated $900/year for books and a monthly stipend ($300/freshman, $350/sophomore, $400/jr, $450/sr).

According to the AFROTC Website the stipend is now $450.00 for juniors and $500.00 for seniors. It now seems to match AROTC Stipends.

With this example, is the remaining $$ at Occidental eligible for "standard" finacial aid? In other words, if DS applied for financial aid from Occidental, does the $18K come off my EFC or is that considered part of the financial aid package?

Type 7 for my DS!! I am confused by the school choice section. My son only has one public school he wants to attend, so does he have to put 3 choices?

My son only listed 2 and it was not a problem. If he is only interested in one and is accepted there, then listing that one should not be a problem. Oh and Congratulations to your son!

I just received my AFROTC scholarship in the mail today. I was awarded a type 2/option to upgrade to type 1 :groupwave: very happy with these results but still waiting on the academy.

Ds just received type 7 AFROTC scholarship letter in the mail today. He was notified he was passed over on the first board in December so this was a pleasant surprise. He also received NROTC scholarship in November and now is just stalking the mailman for plan A... USNA and USAFA. Hoping more good news to follow and wishing all of you still waiting the best of luck! :thumb:

Congratulations!

Our DS got the same letter yesterday.

He is also on the the NWL for USMA.

We were both relieved and very proud that at least one of the avenues to becoming an officer in the military has presented itself. Sometimes you wonder if anyone really is looking at your DS, as if they consider everybody else but him...LOL.

May everybody's trip to the mailbox pay off this Spring!

I got a letter saying I was not selected for a scholarship, but I would be considered at the next board.

Are all applicants re-boarded? Do I still have a shot or is it now highly unlikely?

I'm a critical foreign language major with great academics but lack of sports, so I was quite expecting no scholarship anyway. Just curious, that's all.

Type 2 / Type 1

My DS did receive a type 2 for the major he wants which is either mechanical or aerospace engineering and it is convertible to a type 1 if he chooses from a list of several other majors including nuclear physics, nuclear engineering, meteorology, computer science or electrical engineering. My DS is still waiting to hear from AFA and NA as well as NROTC.

If he signs this letter indicating that he wants either the type 1 or 2 offered, is he obligated to go this route. I'm pretty sure I've read that if later accepted to one of the academies, he can walk away from ROTC. However, if he gets a better deal from NROTC, is he still obligated to AFROTC?

Congratulations to your son.

Accepting the scholarship does not bind him to AFROTC. He can and should accept it now and he can decline it at a later date if he gets another option that is more to his liking.

I was reboarded from the first one and today have just received a denial letter from them.

Sorry for your news :frown:. I think the fact that you were reboarded was positive in the respect that it showed they thought you were worth taking another look at. Do not totally give up on the idea of a scholarship, as I understand the number of in-school scholarships may be slightly increasing. Best of luck to you!
