Second Time on the Roller Coaster

Vietvet67, where is your daughter going?

My son is sooooo excited! He just mailed the last of the NROTC paperwork (Univ of Michigan). He met a few fellow new midshipman at orientation and they are all excited!

Question: are NROTC freshman called plebes?

vietvet67,

The path and end goal remains the same, once they are out on the big pond and steaming the salt it will not matter where they went to school. In fact I believe when the midshipman go out to their summer cruise they are mixed in with other Universities and the Academy.

Dial the gate,

When my DS visited his NROTC unit they said that they reference each other as "Midshipman Whoever." I think the Plebe reference is reserved for the Academy.

Cheers to both of you. Maybe all three of our soon to be mid's will cross paths in the fleet at some point.

I agree 100% with you, the main purpose is to serve this great country the country that open up for me when I was 13 yrs. old coming from a communist
system and at 18 yrs serving in the armed forces.

Indeed, ROTC and Academy mids participate together in the summer cruises/trainings. Son is currently with about 200 ROTC mids at mt. warfare, and he thought about 30 Academy mids were participating. (Take those numbers with a grain of salt--he's been out of cell range since they all left the Reno Airport.) Daughter went ROTC and is currently serving--performance as an officer is not determined by which school they've graduated from.

vietvet67...
Congrats on your NROTC Scholarship at Auburn...it is one of the best Navy ROTCs in the country. My DS who is now a Youngster at USNA has several friends who decided not to go the USNA but instead do NROTC at Auburn. You will get the best of both worlds...the college experience and the opportunity to serve in the Navy. Please PM if you have any questions about Auburn (my DH is an Auburn grad). WAR EAGLE!

Good luck to everyone on this second adventure!

I do believe all of you will be providing encouragement for many who are not posting on this site, but rather are just lurking.

It seems DS is procuring another ticket for this wild ride. He's completed his preliminary application and is lining up what he needs for nominations. I have to admit I'm a bit surprised. He was pretty dejected after being wait listed -- everyone who advised him along the way told him he is just the kind of person USNA looks for and that they would be crazy not to take him, so he was probably a bit more confident than he should have been about his chances. I only hope he has time to get most of the reapplication process done before he heads off to NROTC Orientation next month.

Would appreciate any wisdom on this forum that I can share with him about how open to be about his reapplication with his NROTC unit. I think I read somewhere that the NROTC Commanding Officer is a potential nomination source, but does that mean he could be competing for a nomination with fellow midshipmen in his unit? Are they all up front about it with each other? What does that do to esprit de corps?

On the topic of reapplying, what do I with the DoDMERB part?? I passed everything last year and had no problems, how do I certify that I am still healthy/acceptable? Can't find anything on the DoDMERB website.

I know...don't I have to submit something certifying that I am still in acceptable health/condition?

I had the same question as of last year I was certified by dodmerb but I was unable to complete my application does that mean they still have my dodmerb part of my application even though I was unable to complete it. Long story but I was brand new to my command therefore unable to get my CO'S rec. He wanted to see more of me. This year I have an early start and am pretty sure I can have everything in by sep to get some early looks!

Last year my DS was also unable to complete his first application because he couldn't obtain his commanding officer's recommendation. He had just completed boot camp, MCT, and MOS training. He arrived at his 1st duty assignment in Japan two weeks prior to the Jan 31 deadline only to find his new CO was out of the country on assignment. (Tip for enlisted personnel applying: CO's need some time to evaluate performance before making their recommendation. Duty station timing can be critical in applications sometimes.) My DS reapplied this year. When he received a LOA in Feb, the USNA medical technician added a "remedial" request which showed up on the Dodmerb website. The "remedial" was sent to my DS and asked him to complete the Present Health Questionnaire form and submit it. It's a statement asking for any changes or health concern updates since your first physical. It's my understanding that you don't need to do anything and just wait for USNA to take it from here. If you will be offered a spot, they will request you complete the form. You could call and check with Dodmerb or the USNA medical technician to confirm this process. It's possible they may let you submit the form voluntarily in case it is needed. You might want to check the Dodmerb thread for any other tips like this.

That is great information active duty mom. Thank you. Timing is definitely critical luckily I am only 20 so I have one more try after this one I feel confident this year though as long as I complete the application which hopefully I don't run into any problems I don't see any problem thus far. Thanks for the info again

Best wishes to you! FYI the cutoff age for USNA is 23. Check the website for exact info.

You're welcome joelbradford525. I had a hard time finding info about this and was late to this forum. While it's very competitive to get the spots, really it's all about working together to help USNA get the best mids and future officers out there. Best of luck to you and everyone else on the roller coaster for the second time.

Okay! This just blew my mind. I just received one of these today. I'm a reapplicant and it's only just August and I haven't received any sort of LOA or anything. Is this a special case or are they doing it for every reapplicant?

I'm no expert and was just trying to pass on what we experienced. Maybe they send the remedial requests out for everyone that needs them and it was just a coincidence with timing? My DS didn't submit his app until just prior to 1-31-14 as he waited to earn his second certificate of commendation to improve his chances. His LOA was dated 2-7-14. Now that I think about it, the medical tech might have mentioned that if they considered the applicant to be competitive they may ask for the Present Health Questionnaire in advance. I'd be glad you got the request, but don't assume anything else from it. Sorry if I accidentally got your hopes up.

I suspect DoDMERB is just trying to clear the decks while things are slow before they get REAL busy. As I usually recommend, you shouldn't try to read the tea leaves. You got a remedial. Nothing more. Nothing less.

I called the admissions office regarding getting my SAT/ACT scores and DoDMERB transferred to my new application (so I could get the 40 percent of my application complete that my BGO was requiring to hold my interview), and the lady I spoke with on the phone stated that once a certain amount of the reapplication is complete, DoDMERB requsts the current statement of health form. So it may only have to do with how complete the application is. Since I am hoping to get recs from my college professors, and I don't have my college transcript or CFA done, I don't have enough of my application complete to get my medical done.
