Your parents can come visit you any weekend you do not have duties or other training. Many parents come for football games or other sporting events.

Parents may visit their cadets any weekend they are free.

    Plebes can leave campus on

    A-Day
    Thanksgiving
    Christmas
    Spring Break/Parent Plebe Weekend
    Summer (depending on schedule)
Pass (Plebes receive 1 pass per semester but may earn more)

Can you get walking leave when you don't have a pass? Or are they the same thing? I thought a pass meant you could leave west point by car/train and go somewhere.

A pass allows you to leave and sleep someplace other than WP. Walking priviliges are every weekend that you don't have duty. You can go anywhere within the area prescribed by WP. Once you are a yuk, you get "off post priv" and that allows you to make a day trip to NYC. Again, if you aren't sleeping at WP, you are on some kind of a pass.

How long is the break between finals and CFT after plebe year?

Also, during beast when can plebes use cell phones? Are they also allowed to write letters home?

The break depends on the cadet's individual schedule for the Summer.

New Cadets can only be contacted through mail. No email. They are also given 3 phone calls throughout Beast (10 minutes each) on specific dates.

Last year my son (2012) had 2 1/2 weeks leave after finals then 4 weeks CFT followed by 3 weeks of Airborne school and a weekend leave. That took him right up to Reorgy week and back to school.

New Cadets can use cell phones...just not their own! Cadre will often hand the new cadet their phone (cadre introduced himself and explained the length of the call before handing to my NC). The second phone call is during the ice cream social, which may be a bit longer, depending on the hosts. I know many NC who were able to have multiple long conversations. The letters, however, are priceless..it's an antiquated art that many of this generation are not familiar with! I wrote my NC every day...just so he knew someone was rooting for him when he had tough days. He wrote 5 or 6 letters back, which was way more than I had anticipated.
