I am candidate applying for the academy, graduating class of 2016. I received an email today from the admissions office stating that my file was deferred for semester 1 grades. My semester has not ended yet, and my last transcript sent to the academy was from August, junior year grades.

Does anyone know what this means? Should I be concerned?

    Thank you

not exactly sure, but I think that when your file comes up before the board they have three options, appointment, rejection or deferment. If you were deferred I'm guessing that your application was not strong enough for appointment, but not weak enough for rejection, I'm guessing they want to see the grades from your first semester senior year before they make a decision. I don't necessarily think this is bad news. I'm sure that whistle pig and usna1985 will further enlighten us.

DS application has been complete since late August. He was notified by BGO he is 3Q with 2 noms. We have not received any communication from usna since he attended CVW in oct. Ds just finished semester and was not certain if it is expected he send new transcripts or does the usna only request them from candidates they want to send them. Been searching the usna website but not able to find anything about sending new transcripts after 1st semester senior year. Looking for some advice?

Your son has already been found 3Q, there is no need to send. If appointed, ensure the H.S. sends the final transcript.

Personally, I would recommend having your counselor submit the new semester grades. My reasoning is that there are gradations of being 3Q'ed from barely to profoundly. It certainly appears that there still is competition for your MOCs' appointments, so I would want to ensure that my absolute best scores, grades, etc, are in my file the next time the board reviews it. It could make a difference. Just my opinion, of course, but I think you have to play to win!

1964BGO does bring up a good point. If the transcript is about the norm for your son's grades it probably would make little difference, but, if your son did exceptionally well, it is possible it could tip the balances in your son's favor.

It was about the norm but he did have 2 ap classes (calculus and literature) he got 2 B in the AP classes and all else A's. His class rank may have improved though because of the AP classes- we has 1 of very few that actually got a B in there with the majority of the class with C's and only 1 A. Doubt it will help his application but wonder if it could hurt? ( the 2 B's not being A's)

The AFA Candidate guide expressly says to send in transcripts for the fall of your senior year if you completed your application before the semester was over. Don't know if USNA is the same but DD just had her counselor send them to both anyway. Her class rank didn't change despite the two B's she had in AP classes (Physics and Calc) that doubled her total number of Bs from her first three years.

BGO '64's response begs a question, perhaps several. Once a candidate is 3Qed ... beyond major isses ... is the candidate's portfolio and whole person score dynamic and in continual play until appointed or otherwise? I don't know answer but I'm skeptical. who can enlighten on this?

Just curious, I had my son go ahead and send in his first semester grades even though they were not requested. Should he have waited to for them to ask for them first? Will this be an issue, or will it help support his application?
He is 3 q'd and has a nom.

I have no idea but my son is in the same boat, triple q'd nomination and deferred. He was encouraged to stay in contact with his admissions counselor and send in his first semester grades at the end of the term. Unless your son bombs out his first semester senior year (showing senioritis) or took cream puff courses his first semester I can't see how it would hurt. Most highly competitive colleges want to see first semester senior year to make sure their dealing with a serious student, I'm guessing USNA is no different.

On another thread BGO (I think) said that applicants could continue to update their file until the 2/28 deadline. I have to assume, therefore, that the whole person score is dynamic. Otherwise it wouldn't make any sense for an otherwise completed application, which was the context of the discussion.

I've seen same, but I would not assume that reflects a policy or consistent, comprehensive practice. Anyone know?
