    I have not yet sent in my information to Senator Kennedy for a nomination but I was wondering if anyone knows how his death will impact the nominations here in Massachusetts.

    I don't think he will be giving any nominations, and their process to elected a new senator in a special election has recently changed.

    Although it is true that Sen Kennedy himself will not be signing off on nominations, please have some confidence that there is a system in place and all Senate activities in Massachusetts will not stop because of this sad event.
    Please consider these inputs for the same sort of situation in Florida. Good luck!

    Unlike most states, a successor to fill Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's seat in the Senate will be chosen through a special election, not by the governor.

    Massachusetts law requires a special election for the seat no sooner than 145 days and no later than 160 days after a vacancy occurs. The law bans an interim appointee.

    I believe it WILL have an impact on service academy nominations from MA. The earliest a successor can be chosen is January 18, 2010.

    Kennedy Nominations

    Although Kennedy's staff will be affected by his loss - his staff will also be sure his nomination process will not be.

    I highly recommend the following;

    Give the staff the rest of this week to grieve.

    Contact the staff early next week and to ask the status of your nomination request.

    Additionally, depending on where you live - if you have yet to do so - be sure to attend the Service Academy Forum that your Member of the US House of Representatives hosts/participates in. If you live on the South Shore/Cape Cod or the Islands - there are 2 events - one in May hosted by my college - and one in Marshfield next month. Info on that program ca be found on this weblink;

    If you are not from our area - email me and I will try to direct you to a program.

    Good Luck with the nomination process.

    How can the "staff" of a deceased US Senator nominate a candidate to a US service academy?

    Hi all!

    Okay, I "knew" the answer but with nothing in writing, I wanted to ask before I spoke.

    So I just literally got off the phone with the folks up at USAFA and asked the very question you all have: "What happens to the nomination process with the passing of Senator Kennedy?"

    The answer was two-fold. First, nominations are not "due" until the end of January 2010. Second, since the state elects a new senator, as opposed to a gubernatorial appointment, the academy's would "wait" for the new senator to take office and then work with them. The person I spoke with "assumed" that the previous senators' staff would have done the majority of the work already and it would be passed to the new staff to complete.

    NOBODY will be left behind/out because of the passing of a member of the house or senate.

    It's good to know that the candidates from MA will not be punished by a partisan political process.

    The latest the election could be lawfully held is 2/1/10, so it's not likely they will have to delay the nomination submissions too long.
