So I have recently been appointed to the Naval Academy Prep School, which to my understanding is after successful completion of one year I'm guaranteed admission into the Naval Academy class of 2015.

Senior Honors night is coming up, and of course I want to announce it, but do you think it’s acceptable to include the guaranteed admission to the Academy, and its monetary value?

I don’t want to sound boastful, but I know that nothing can deter me from the Academy and I am fully aware of what awaits me, and actually looking very forward to it anyways since I live with a Chief Petty Officer as a father.

Thanks for any advice, and should my BGO be invited to present it?

We had a boy from our high school who went to NAPS too (he's a Marine now :) and at our Awards ceremony his BGO presented the award. It was very moving, he got a standing ovation.

I would say that you should definitely have your BGO come!

Congrats!!!

First Congratulations! It is an honor to be accepted in fact selection to the prep school is harder to accomplish than getting in to the Academy by virtue of the number of young men and women selected. As far as guaranteed admission, I would hold off on that a lot can happen in a year and nothing is guaranteed. Is it OK to invite your BGO? That is at the discretion of the school as a general rule I would say yes. Is it OK to say after successful completion of NAPS you plan to attend USNA, yes. Is it OK to include the overall value of the educational experience, yes.

If your School is OK with the BGO presenting then let him spell everything out, he has done it before and knows what and how to articulate this accomplishment.

Again Congrats, Fair Winds and Following Seas, and perhaps I will see you on Parent's Weekend!

How about this:

The United States Naval Academy has assigned FUTURE SEAL to its Prep School in Newport RI, followed by a four year appointment in Annapolis MD.

The appointment is yours to lose. Good luck and Congrats!:thumb:

When my son had the Appointment presented to him at his Honors Night, his BGO presented it by saying both the monetary value and that with successful completion of NAPS, he is guarenteed an appointment to the USNA Class of 2015.

It is a great honor to be appointed, so why not give it everything that it is worth? You worked hard to get it!!

The key is 'successful' completion. Each year there are prep school graduates that are not offered appointments to the academy. The academy re-evaluates the complete candidate at the end of the school year and makes their selections based on qualifications and need. If the candidate meets the criteria they are successful if not then not. Typically appointments are not earned until the final days before prep graduation. Prep school is competitive. Don't underestimate the effort needed.

Congratulations on being offered NAPS! Do contact your BGO re presentation at your Awards Night program. You should have received a certificate for your NAPS offer; the BGO can present that with an appropriate description of what you have accomplished. I usually characterize it as having passed the selection process as the offer is generated by the Admissions Board. It will take hard work and dedication on your part, but selection for an appointment is in the 90+ per cent range. Best wishes to you.
