For those who have progressed through many of the forms on the Portal, when DD completed the form for SGLI, the default was $400,000, which deducts $30+ dollars from your paycheck. This is the default, but can be easily changed while completing the form.
I had her choose $50,000, for just a few dollars a month, since as a cadet, she has no debt or dependent responsibility. Additionally, she is also covered under our family insurance plans.
This, of course, is a personal choice.
I only bring this up since one of the recent emails we received said you had to take the $400,000, but could change it once you were at the Academy. The election can be made when you fill out the portal forms.

You can change the amount you signed up for at a later date, but if you try to increase the policy amount it might get rejected. We were told it gets subjected to "medical underwriting".

Changing the policy amount is pretty simple once you're here. There's one office you stop by, and it takes less than five minutes.

SGLI and civilian life insurance policies are two different animals. If you cannot pass a medical exam in the military, if even required, to increase the coverage, you probably won't be in the military much longer anyway.
