Ship locator

I didn't realize there were choices for visas! What ship is he on? Our DS is going on The Green Dale, pulling out of Pusan South Korea July 14th. Should be an interesting flight from NYC to their final destination.:shake:

Parents and midshipmen; perhaps for the benefit of the newbies of all sorts you can maybe answer these questions?

1) Do most ships have email? Do they get to use it?
2) At ports are there phones and "seaman" type room for purchasing international phone cards, skyping or calling home? I hear that is the case with many ports. Much obliged.

My answers:
1) While many/most US ships have email access and bandwidth management limits will vary greatly depending on the ship/company policy and how its provided, especially while underway. Access to email may be limited to short occasional emails while underway because of the costs of and limits on bandwidth. That said, the "connectivity" and ability to send occasional, short emails is a huge difference from how things were even 10 years ago. Also remember - an email to your DS/DD to his or her shipboard email address if they have one is an email to their work address and may very well NOT be private.

2) In most seaports, there are merchant seaman clubs such as Seaman's Church Institute in NYC. These locations are basically "safe havens" for seaman and usually have computers with Internet access for free or a nominal charge, sell International Calling Cards, power conversion adapters, and other things of typical use for working merchant seaman visiting that port, etc. Further like I say, the location can and often is a "safe haven" for sailors where they don't have to worry about being propositioned, hassled or hustled/scammed as many are run by missions. As noted they are found in most seaports and they also often have shuttles from the dock area available as well.
