Shopping for school.....

Please note that wireless mouse and external hard drive are not apporved, you will also not be isued your comuter during indoc so don't bother. You probably will also not have a minute to read or relax.

Put notebooks and desired school supplies on the side so parents will know what to ship as the start of class gets close. It was hard to talk to DS during indoc and I did not want to talk about a school supply list!!

you should bring things you do not need during indoc because you will need them directly after indoc.

A couple of thoughts on this thread...all of which is interesting and good information for incoming Plebes...
My thoughts and our experience:
1) Bring the non-school supply stuff that toddman lists as they are useful and as he indicates if you don't find them useful during indoc, you'll find them useful immediately after it, namely:
are necessary post indoc for a plebe.

  • Never Dull brass polisher or semicrome polish
a pair of nylons for shining shoes
    a computer mouse
    more body wash and shampoo
    an electric razor
    external hardrive
    waterbottle
    entertaining books
    Duct tape
    a watch
    hair clippers
    stain remover/stain stick

- re the mouse - you can use either a wired or wireless mouse, no approval is or should be needed for that;
- re the external hard drive I don't know where the official policy stands on that item but it is very helpful to back up files, etc. and I thought the policies were being looked at on this because of the desire/need for mids to do so and have them especially during sea year.
- re: the fan, I'm mixed on this one, there are lots of therm around USMMA, way more than needed and each year it seems 3X as many as needed are brought by the incoming class as are needed. That said, they are useful and they cost ~$20...and if you don't bring on, it's probably Murphy's Law striking and you scrounging one, that said it gives you something to do - 50/50 it's your call.....

2) School Supplies - I recommend going to WalMart and buying a bunch of the normal school supply stuff as well as a couple of reams of computer paper, putting it in 1, 2, or three stranded US Postal Service Mailing Boxes and having it ready to go. Then have your parents mail it to you at USMMA during the last week of indoc.... It's a lot cheaper way to go than buying it at the NEX and when the NEX runs out you don't have to rely on your Team Leader to go to Target/K-Mart and get stuff for you....

Finally it is very amusing to me to see the on-line debate between toddman and kpmom2011, I'm waiting for suzannegra, toddman's surrogate mom to weigh in....

How many days till graduation now toddman?

Is the lack of a bathing suit on the Logging In list a mistake or will one be issued?

Hey quick question. When I arrive at INDOC should I bring the items such as iron, swiffer mop, never Dull brass polisher or semicrome polish, pairs of nylons for shining shoes,
and the extra pairs of under garments? Or should I have them shipped so thay arrive during or after INDOC?

Also when you say external hard-drive, do you mean the USB drives, or the actual, large external hard-drives? THanks

Apgallozzie...bring to indo only the items listed in the Logging In instructions. Have the rest of the items shipped up to you after indoc. Any "extra" items you bring will most likely not be allowed in your possession, and you don't want to make yourself stand out by being the one with all the stuff :)

kpmo2011:Far be it to me to disagree but I would suggest Apgallozzi and friends each consider bringing both a Right-Handed AND a Left-Handed skyhook as well as everything in the Logging In Instructions. They come in very handy and since until you get there you don't know which side of the room your bunk will be in the barracks, you don't know which type to bring with you.

Ha Im not exactly sure what a sky hook is so forgive me if you're joking and I didn't catch that lol

you'll normally find the 'sky hook' in the locker next to the 'radar contacts'..

Apollagazzi: You've got it, though I've never thought of using a skyhook to avoid traffic, I'll have to try that tomorrow morning.

Ha Im used to ppl jackin up my last name but this cracks me up lol. G A L L O Z Z I
No worries haha.
But yea it saves a lot of time, just make sure the roof has ample landing space and your good with a chute

So anyway... When I arrive at INDOC should I bring the items such as iron, swiffer mop, never Dull brass polisher or semicrome polish, pairs of nylons for shining shoes,

indoc supplies

Remember you will be carrying everything. For hours.

Nylons/never dull/extra undergarmets, they are tiny - fine. Let the big stuff come to you courtesy of the US mail arriving perfectly for after indoc/before classes starting. Trust your parents to not want to get you in any trouble or noticed as "special" and to get the extra helpful supplies to you at the right time. I think that will always be one of our families favorite lines. :thumb:

bring the Iron

You will need an iron during indoc you can either bring one or buy one at the NEX.

Just to clear the air i am class of 2013. Toddman10 is what my dad called me when i was little.

heavy full size iron

Second that. Talked to DS tonight and he said that an heavy full size iron is a must for indoc. Good luck and enjoy the experience. :thumb:

You can carry the iron on the skyhook :) Counting down the days....enjoy your last few weeks at home!

I'm not sure why everyone thinks that the bags you bring will have to be carried around for hours, but this is incorrect. Once your Candidate get's into O'Hara Hall, he/she will drop their bags off and will not see them until later that afternoon. The bags will be transported to the individual companies for them to pick up later. The bags they carry around all day are the ones that are issued to them once they leave O'Hara and head down to 0 deck.

Noted that the items listed, all of which are good things to bring, were mainly of the common sense items (body glide, etc.). One thing I wish we or DS had boiught on Day 1 that is available was USAA Renter's Insurance (~41/year) for Midn'.
He has it now but it would have paid for itself 30+ times over when he inadvertantly left his computer oin the Amtrak train when he was returning to KP from a spring weekend liberty at home here in DC. It covers their computers and several other things that could come in handy and it's was only $41.00/year when we bought it the first time last year. If it went up, it can't have been all that much since DS paid for the renewal and if it went up too much he might have reconsidered "betting against himself."

With regard to Renter's Insurance, do we need to buy enough coverage for the laptop computer daughter will get from West Point or will WP replace it if it gets lost or stolen? Are the cadets offered to buy a policy on R-day/A-day or should we secure it before reporting on the 27th of June?

Thank you!

Shopping for school

The list for the class of 2014 does say black compression shorts. We had trouble finding the shorts. The mesh was not an isssue. They wanted them at 7". We never found those so I had to have them hemmed. We found the shoes at Sports Authority. It is hard to believe our first year is almost over. I also had to send boxes of school supplies so flat rate boxes will become your best friend! :thumb:
