Son just started JNROTC as a senior. It's the first year that it is offered in his high school. LtCommander learned of his college plans....applying to USAFA, applying for AROTC and AFROTC scholarships...son has been promised an AROTC scholarship from PMS at his #2 school....son just accepted last week at that #2 school.

He then said "I can offer you an immediate scholarship right now." Son has a few schools on his list that have NROTC...

so...should son continue with this and accept LtCommander's offer as another option or only accept it if son is sure he'll go NROTC route. Would it be bad form to accept it if he's not quite sure about NROTC?

Absolutely, accept it! NROTC scholarships are getting harder to get because of some force reduction in that branch. He is not committed to it and can turn it down later. It happens all the time that students get scholarships to multiple branches and/or appointments to one or more of the academies and can only accept one in the end.

okay...I'll have son continue the talks. LtComm wanted to bring him down to local private university (top 20) to talk to the NROTC people there. It's probably wise to get all the information.

He just didn't want to take it away from someone else.....but if he doesn't use it I'm assuming it will go to someone else in the end.

I agree with the above post, take it and he'll always have the option to decline later. BTW, the abbreviation for Lt. Commander (O-4) is LCDR, you'll need to know that stuff in the future

Thank you...I'll need to learn these abbreviations, acronyms, secret language! Son will finish his college apps this weekend and bring in plans/resume to LCDR next week.
