I am planning to post some of my observations about the technique my DS used to master the basketball throw event on the CFA in the hope that it will help other USMA candidates (as soon as I find the time to do it right). I suppose that I will be posting this on the USMA forum, even though the advice could help future USNA, USAFA, USMMA candidates as well. But then I thought, "Why isn't there a forum where everyone applying to SAs or ROTC can post questions and thoughts about this important area?" It is, after all, one of the three Q's needed to gain admission to a SA. There is already a board dedicated to DoDMERB issues. Why not CFA/PFT?

I suppose the "CFA/PFT" board could evolve to include discussion topics like recommendations for exercise routines, what are the minimum standards for, say, AFROTC scholarships, how much PT should my DS expect if enrolled in NROTC, how much weight does USCGA place on the PFT, or tips on passing particular CFA events, etc. These are all NOT just Service Academy issues. Just a suggestion.

AT USCGA it's called the PFE (Physical Fitness Exam) and the minimums are posted and the scores are graded - you MUST score above a 130 to receive an appointment, swabs MUST score at least 165 at the end of semester 1 or be disenrolled, and Firsties MUST score at least 200 to graduate/commission.

    300 Points = 300 Club
    285-299 = Max Club
    270-284 = A (Blue Star awarded)
    258-269 = A-
    246-257 = B+
    234-245 = B
    222-233 = B-
    210-221 = C+
    200-209 = C
    155-199 = D
    0-154 = F

The average PFE score for the Class of 2014 was 212.

Yea the basketball throw wasn't bad for me either, wouldn't mind helping there. I have background as a goalkeeper so basically it ended up me a throwing like I would in a game. Beat out a ton of the guys in my platoon at SLS ;)

PDB88 and Casey, I will likely get around to this over the weekend. Probably the best way is for you guys to add your $0.02 after my post on the USMA forum. My DS had a tough time with this and practiced his tail off before figuring out the technique.

Basketball throw wants to be at launch angle of approx 45 degrees for maximum range.

I think a CFA thread would be awesome! It could also include, like you all mentioned, workout routines for people to get ready for Beast or Plebe Summer. It could also include stuff on the APFT and the other services' equivalents.

This is a great idea! It would allow more people to give advice on fitness questions rather than just having each particular group (USAFA,USCGA,USMA,ROTC....) discussing it amongst themselves.

Yes, excellent idea, I tried starting one one USNA's side of the board, but it died after about a month lol.

I think that this would be a great idea and a good addition to the forums. A lot of questions and good ideas have been placed in respective folders regarding the CFA, and other tests. Combining them would be a good idea in my mind.

So people don't think we are ignoring this, we are discussing this idea at higher levels. Thank you for the suggestions!

Have the mods come up with a decision on a separate forum for the CFA yet? I dont want to bug any of the powers that be but I'm interested in how this one turns out.

After much discussion it was fairly unanimous that there wasn't much to be gained by starting an entirely new subforum for the CFA's. The main argument against was actually made by CandidateElias15, even though he didn't realize it:

This doesn't mean that there will never be one though.

And it doesn't mean that someone can't start a thread on fitness programs & CFA/ PFT preparation in one of the existing common forums like Academy News or Off Topic.

One of the reasons for not having a separate forum is that each SA looks at the CFA differently (and USCGA/USMMA use different tests). What elements are important, what scores are needed, etc., differ from one SA to another. For example, USNA doesn't care about the basketball throw but USMA does. Thus, you are better off posting your questions in the particular SA forum in which you're interested.

We will keep an eye on this and, if there appears to be a reason to create a separate forum for this topic, we will reconsider.

Thank you for considering. Citing the differences between academies' and ROTC branches' physical requirements does make sense.

It is comforting to know that the mods take an active approach in making sure SAF is as effective and informative as it can be.

I do not believe this to be the case. USMMA uses the same test as every other academy, and while Coast Guard has their own, they do accept the CFA.
