The Citadel wins "The Military Classic of the South" for the eighth straight time and ninth in the last eleven meetings defeating VMI 45-25 to retain possession of the Silver Shako Trophy. Bulldogs lead the series 24-10 which was inaugurated in 1976.

Yes, citadel leads the series, but there again, at least all of VMI's football players are actually cadets... and they played their hearts out.

It wasn't a bad game as VMI football games go. Their Rat QB -Al Cobb clearly can throw the ball- sadly his receivers were not as reliable- 2 TDs missed in the end zone after a blocked punt. And not one but TWO extra points missed??
Citadel had a pretty impressive game on the ground- I think it was Smith that literally dragged a tackler for about 10 years into the End Zone? Congratulations to the Bulldogs!
And I believe a goodbye is - or should be in order for Coach Sparky Woods of VMI who has really just not been able to put together even a mediocre program in 7 years at the helm. It's a program that is for certain hard to recruit for, but they have made no progress at all in his time there. Play calling has been poor, fundamentals and execution the same. So I believe it's time for a change.

Not exactly a defensive struggle; Cid couldn't stop the pass and VMI couldn't stop the run. Cobb is a very talented QB who has the potential to be one of the best in FCS but they could use more balance in the running game. I would question the logic of having scrapped the triple option since all the other military schools have prospered with it and it clearly favors teams with less talent, it will be interesting to see if the new coach makes the switch back. The VMI cadets and fans were extremely polite and gracious towards the visitors, I salute both schools for having true student athletes and not sacrificing their standards in the name of winning sports teams.
