Am I a competitive candidate for USMA's Summer Leadership Experience program?

Academics:
- SAT: 2020 (720 Critical Reading /620 Math/680 Writing)
- G.P.A: 89% (GPA is low because of school competitiveness... I'm probably in the top 20-30% of my class year)
- Current Honors/A.P. courses: Alg. 2/Trig. Honors, A.P. English Language and Composition (took mostly honor courses freshman/sophomore year...took AP world history sophomore year)
- AP Exams: 4/5 on AP world History exam

Extracurriculars/Notable Accomplishments:
- Student Council for two years (part of the public relations committee)
- Reporter for the student newspaper for two years (only seniors are editors)
- Guitarist and Electric Bassist for school Jazz band for three years
- JROTC for three years (current rank- sergeant first-class)/ Staff NCO (S-1: administration) for two years
- President of the Freshman/Sophomore Honor Society (two years: freshman and sophomore year)

Athletics:
- I'm fairly athletic but have not done a lot of sports in favor of Band...
- Swimming Junior Varsity Team (Freshman Year)
- Wrestling Junior Varsity Team (Junior year) (will definitely be able to make varsity by senior year)
- Boxing club (Junior Year)
- Participated in a few Table Tennis tournaments (did not win) and still play recreationally

I know it's not extremely impressive but...do I have a chance?

You're an extremely qualified applicant! I'm about 95% sure you'll get in.

Good luck!

JSH123,
I don't think anyone on here can give you odds (especially 95%) of whether you'll get selected for SLE, especially another candidate. If you do get selected, that's great! You should take full advantage of the experience. You will be able to take the CFA at SLE, so make sure you're in shape before going.

If you are not selected, remember that a lot of candidates that aren't selected eventually get appointments. Make sure you are doing everything within your control your senior year re. grades, test scores, etc. Apply to Boys State, take the ACT/SAT again, keep your grades up, etc. and work on your Plans B, C and D.

Good luck!

JSH123,

I attended SLE last summer and there were plenty of candidates attending with far better and far worse credentials than myself; I would say I was right about average. My statistics at the time were as followed--

SAT: 1890
ACT: 29
GPA: 3.667
AP Classes: AP World History, AP English Composition
Class Rank: 80-415
Varsity Football: 10-11
Varsity Track: 9-11
Varsity Powerlifting: 10-11
Student Council: 11
Student Leadership: 11
Student Mentor: 11
National Honor Society: 10-11
Student Leadership at my church: 10-11
Student Choir: 9-11
Engineering Club: 10-11
>250 hours of community service

Clearly not the entire resume I submitted when applying but those are the most common stats and facts. Hope this helps give you an idea. PM me with any questions about SLE.
