The NCAA just released their selections for the D3 NCAA tournament and USMMA earned one of the Pool C "at large" bids to the tournament. They currently sit at 15-3 and have had a great season.

This is a huge accomplishment for the team as they play in a very competitive conference. I was lucky enough to play in the 2000 tournament, unfortunately losing our second game. Hopefully they have better luck this year.

Go Mariners!!!!

Anybody know where in Philadelphia, when, and who the Mariners play this weekend in the tournament....

And for the record Luigi, I know you know we got rid of that silly seagull mascot some time ago...

Also seriously, why is the Bear a mascot for USCGA? I never got that one...

That's great, because the Captain Morgan Rum logo was much better.

As recently as 1984, a live bear (Objee) was kept on the Academy grounds and occasionally roamed the barracks. A bit of history: By 1926, the bear had been the Academy's mascot for sometime in honor of the Cutter Bear, which had served in the Arctic Zone for years. However, it was during this year that a Cadet by the name of Steven Evans returned from leave with a live bear cub. He somehow talked the Superintendent, Captain Hinckley, into allowing the bear to stay at the Academy. The bear was named Objee, which was short for "objectionable presence." He had many homes throughout his tenure at the Academy, but the one he spent the most time in, and his last home was the old Academy observatory next to Billard Hall. Although he did not sleep in Chase Hall, Objee was often brought into the barracks and turned loose. He showered in the cadet showers, and was even allowed to eat in the wardroom from time to time. Cadet Objee was particularly fond of visiting cadets during study hour. Apparently he lived up to his name because finally in 1984 after 27 live Objees, the tradition was ended.

I too prefer the Captain Morgan's logo, BTW, my DS, just returned from sea and has indicated he will be lobbying that KP adopt a parrot as a mascot - LOL... I believe we should return to the Pedigreed Newfoundland of my day and re-create the mascot squad as those dogs had no shortage of mid's who happily volunteered to care for them and they had nice quarters in the Arcade between Rogers and Cleavland halls...

I also believe that USCGA needs another live bear but why fool around with those wimpy black bears...go for a serious, real bear like a Polar or better yet one of those nice, "friendly" grizzlies...oh and regular postings on youtube of the new, improved Objies" wandering and "foraging" the halls of the barracks too, please..:yllol:

SWARTHMORE, Pa -- Swarthmore College overcome an early one-goal deficit to register a 2-1 win over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in an NCAA Division III men's first-round encounter Saturday night.

Swarthmore will play Hobart in a second-round match at 6 p.m. Sunday. Hobart defeated St. Joseph's College, 2-1, in the first game of the doubleheader Saturday.

Rusty Denson gave Kings Point a 1-0 lead before the Garnet rallied with a pair of first-half goals, a header by Gage Newman in the 30th minute and the game-winner with four seconds remaining in the half. No player was awarded the second goal. It was called a team goal.

Yes Luigi the KP Mids did loose yesterday in the NCAA Division III soccer tournement. Also I didn't note whether Objee the Bear was at the KP Basketball Opener but I did notice the headline indicated: "Mariners Win Season Opener Over Coast Guard, 73-58" ...

Missed the post on the USCGA Forum wasn't trying to rub it in too much...really...
