I am unsure whether or not I want a sponser family, would it be better to select yes and decline later or no and request one if I change my mind?

I don't know how it works if you decline and then change your mind. But if you do get a sponsor, there is also nothing that locks you or the sponsor into it. It's just an opportunity available.

Fill out the form with your honest interests and take it a step at a time like everything else.

I recommending checking "yes." At the Sponsor Social later in the summer, you will have a chance to meet the sponsor family you've been matched with. You can test drive the program, and if it's not for you, you can always politely decline future invitations, and formalize that decision by dropping by the Sponsor Coordinator's office during the academic year to get yourself disassociated. You may find yourself going along to a roommate's sponsor home, a local mid's family home, or just doing your own thing. Don't rule out an option before fully evaluating how you fit with it.

I agree. Our DD had a sponsor family while she was at the Academy and they were great.
Practically ran a taxi service for her till 2/C year when she bought a car which they helped her choose. A place to go "hang out" away from the Yard.
