Hi all! I have a question about sports recruiting at SA's. I know that they are div 1 schools (USNA, USAFA, and USMA) and thus, would be very competitive. But it would be amazing to play on one of their varsity sports teams. Of course, my main goal is the academy, but to play a d1 sport would just complete everything. the trouble is, I'm not SO good a player that the major d1 schools would probably recruit me. would you say its slightly easier at an academy? what about walk-ons? *i'm thinking specifically about women's basketball

(also, i have looked into women's rowing since at USNA the coach told me 80% of the team is new to the sport and are thus walk-ons)

You can walk on to any sport. During plebe summer there is a time for "sports period" and you get to sort of try-out a new sport and see if you can make the team. Some sports for women's which you need to be really good to make (read, barely any walk ons) are womens swimming, track and lacrosse. But there are some that you can walk on. Like Women's crew. Our women's basketball team isn't very good, but at the same time, its a small team, so walk=on might be difficult.

thanks for the info!

i emailed the coach to notify of my interest and ask what to do next. i hope that's ok and doesn't seem "unproffessional". i'm not sure if i sure register w/ the ncaa so i can be recruited since i'm only interested at playing at the academies

There are also many club sports that compete at the Division 1 college level. All of the players are walk-ons.

When you applied for NASS, wasn't there a spot that asked you if you were recruited, and if not, if you'd be interested in being contacted by the coach? My son wasn't recruited (and probably wouldn't make the team there), but he did put he was interested in being contacted, and filled in the subsequent page it linked you to asking for all your personal and team stats, accomplishments, etc. and contact numbers for your current coaches.

We filled out contact info for my son but was never contacted. We then initiated contact directly with the coach and it was well received. Don't be afraid to tell them of your desire to compete, who is going tell them if you don't??

well i emailed USMA, USNA, and USAFA coaches this weekend. so far i've heard back from USMA to set up a visit to my high school! so i'm happy and excited!
