I was wondering how many sports you would need to play to have a good chance of being accepted. The only sport I do is wrestling and I was wondering if I would need to play a team sport to get in. I am a freshman and I got a varsity letter for football and wrestling this year, but I really do not like football and I am thinking about not playing next year. I know that I will wrestle for the rest of high school, but will it hurt my chances badly if I do not play football or another team sport?

There are mids who played one sport in high school, and some who were year round 3 sport athletes...point is, play what you LIKE not what you think will get you into USNA. That's what my BGO tells me.

Three Pillars

The SA looks for three character builders for a well-rounded cadet. One is academics, two Leadership and three Athletics. Now remember they are not looking for the best but best well rounded candidate. So team sports are extremely important. How can you gain leadership in a sport that does not involve a team? I know WP has a strong wrestling team but you get my point. Find something you enjoy, excel at it and have fun. Its not how many letters you can get from every sport on you jacket.

PS: I was voted MVP, 5 years in a row at my High School. Still today, after 40 years that record still stands! Very proud of that fact, but my kids tell me to keep it to myself. I don’t understand why?

Both High school Football and Wrestling is highly acceptable and lettering in both of them is an accomplishment, however I do recommend doing a spring sport as well (not just for the academy) As someone who does Football, and 2 seasons of track a year (winter/spring) I can not stress enough how valuable doing athletics year round is for your other sport. Although I am aware that track is a different type of work out, and I am sure you lift or stay I shape in other ways during the off season, nothing can compare to the structure of year round athletics.
