My plebe pursued plan B with a school that offered him honors college, scholarship and freshman research opportunities. He reached out to them after paying deposit, to let them know he was accepting USNA but would like to keep his spot just in case. They understood and even offered to hold his scholarship when he told them he would give it up. Then just before parents weekend we were notified (and confirmed with a phone call) that he wouldn't be attending (he had also missed a required honors college orientation. I was glad he had it even though we lost the deposit. It was WELL worth it for the peace of mind.

My son now a sophomore at CGA continued to pursue his Plan B up until R-Day. He accepted his NROTC scholarship at ERAU and paid the deposit, etc. Once R-Day came and left we mailed in his prepared declination. In my opinion there is nothing wrong with that. All of the XROTC scholarships anticipate this and offer a percentage more than they are allotted knowing the true yield will be lower. He earned it and it was his right to handle it that way.

Too many horror stories of DQs on R-Day or I-Day to play the odds. At least if something happened he could fall back in Plan-B with a few weeks to work things out.

As far as appointments to other SA's , he received an appointment to USNA as well and promptly declined in February once the decision to attend CGA was final.

Again, just my opinion for what it's worth.
