Start checking NROTC portal!!

I also got the "We're sorry, no scholarship" message. At least now I know and can continue planning for the future. Good luck to you all, and congrats to those who did receive a scholarship!

Wow! How were athletics and leadership?

Respectable but coaches don't name "captains" for his sports

Swimming (4yrs); X-Country(3yrs); Track(3yrs). Varsity letter in swimming; second will be earned this year; varsity letter in X-Country (but prob not in the file w/NROTC since earned last Dec); ROTC Fitness at/above avg; Academy CFA right around average

Student Rep to the School Board; Boys State; HS Rep to Young Patriots Conf of Valley Forge; area rep to American Leaders Youth Summit; SLS; AIM; Civil Air Patrol (2 yrs); CAP Encampment;

EC's
Academic Team (2yrs); Math Team(3yrs); Cyberpatriot; Youth Group through HS/JR High; AV Team Lead for Youth group

DS did not think NROTC Officer interview went well. That probably weighed heavily against him. In contrast, he received good feedback from all other interviews (and did get two MOC nominations).

Interestingly the Portal says he "will receive a letter explaining other options available to you." I'm assuming those will be join as a programmer, OCS, reserve, etc.

As NavyNurse said, congrats to all who received scholarships. The competition had to be fierce.

DS' portal changed to "We're sorry . . ." as well. LOA and appt to USNA. 1500+ SAT (math/CR). 10 AP's with A's in all. 4.3+ GPA. Elected school officer. Varsity sport 3 years and Captain this year. Tier 1 major. Already accepted to 1st choice school. Things that come to mind as to why he was not awarded scholarship: schools on list were all private top-tier (with exception of one out of state public school where he would have to pay full tuition). I thought that scholarship decision for NROTC was separate from school choice, but maybe not, esp. in light of impending budget cuts. Also, at recruiter's urging, BGO interview for USNA was used for NROTC interview. Interview went great, but BGO had never done NROTC interview before. Perhaps summary submitted to NROTC was geared more to USNA than NROTC. Regional recruiter also said scholarship awards from his region are way down this year. DS may accept appt to USNA, but if not, he will do college program at the dream school to which he has been accepted. Congratulations to everyone who received a scholarship. To those who have not, this is not the end of the road. It is only the beginning.

Scholarship regions?

Are the NROTC scholarships given out by regions or nationally? The reason I ask is that there have already been 5-6 scholarships given out from our local recruiter alone. Their stats have been equivalent to my DS's which are lower than some on here that have been denied. I'm a little worried that they have reached their quota on stats like his from our region. He has not been denied yet though.

It is national, but tied to the college on the candidate's list too. There maybe kids getting the scholarship to schools your child did not apply to in the 1st place.

SAs are regional...aka Congressional or Senator noms.

DS also received denial on portal. Still awaiting word from USNA. Glad we were diligent in working on plans C,D,E,F... Congrats to those who were accepted and good luck to those still waiting. Our kids are all great and I have great faith that they will succeed in whatever path they undertake.

Wow! I can't believe the caliber of candidates who are not receiving a scholarship this year. I'm sort of with Pmh in that perhaps school selection is playing more of a role this year, but I'm just guessing. Hopefully an appointment will come through for him. BTW, your surmise on the letter is absolutely correct, but it's worth a read and there could be some valuable new information in there this year. One never knows. Good luck to your DS.

@Pmh - Sorry about the news but glad to hear doing NROTC as a college programmer is in the mix. There is a lot more value in the program, as far as I'm concerned, than the money. My son has really blossomed in college and, aside from what DS brought to it which he didn't show in high school, I attribute it all to NROTC. I can really start to see the budding young officer emerging. Good luck to your DS.

I suppose it's a positive in a way that you both know the outcome of that exercise. We were in limbo until mid-April. Which in itself is another sign of the times, as there is no way my son would have been competitive against your kids and wouldn't have lasted until mid-April this year.

Wow

Sorry to hear that lots of people got bad news yesterday...but it sounds like many of you had Academy or other ROTC options. My DD's portal still reads "No decision has been made". I am hoping that is a good thing as we did not apply to the academy or other ROTCs.

DS was disappointed he did not receive the NROTC scholarship but then started laughing that his plan A(USNA) came through early and his plan B (NROTC) and plan C (AFROTC) fell through. His resume seems to be on par with those that have recieved and denied scholarships. I am starting to lean in the direction of his school choices as a contributing factor for denial. His plan D is Georgia TEch (accepted) on the state scholarship(secured) as a programmer. We are holding onto GT in case a bad luck senario happens. Interesting that the LOA to USNA is denied, shows that alot of behind the scenes decisions(like location and budget cuts) that we cannot control have big impacts on potential recipients. Good Luck too all. Go Navy!!

Son's school selections (in order of preference listed on application) were:
1. UVa
2. Purdue
3. Virginia Tech
4. Georgia Tech
5. Embry-Riddle

He got his first choice, UVA, which is an IS school for us.

Hope this helps someone.

Is there more coordination between NROTC and USNA this year? Seems like candidates are getting one or the other but not both. Any thoughts Kinnem?

I honestly wouldn't know, but the thought has crossed my mind as well. I don't know why they would coordinate though, as I don't see any advantage to them. I don't think there is a big deal if an NROTC scholarship goes unused at this point in time. It either gets rolled into sideload scholarship money or back into something else. But then the mysteries of the inscrutable Navy often puzzle me.

I agree with kinnem.

The fact is USNA has to follow nom process before they start going off the National list regarding appointments.

That typically happens in March.

Whereas, NROTC would be spinning down by March and have been handing out scholarships before the USNA 1st board met.

That being said, I believe USNA's diversity program may be a reason why you are seeing it too.

so I'm reading that two Appointees to the USNA on this thread did not get a scholarship for NROTC... this sort of reinforces my understanding that the NROTC scholarship is the hardest to get (they pay all 4 years, or nothing, unlike AFROTC with its $18,000 scholarships, and to an extent AROTC with the 3 Yr. AD track), so there are far fewer recipients.

Best of luck to all you NROTC denials with your backup plans.

Reading back, I really doubt that the USNA and NROTC are coordinating to reject NROTC candidates except maybe for a few select who had appointments or are already known to be the eventual winner of their MOC slate. As I understand it from briefings, normally those who are strong on the NWL that won't get appointments due space are referred to NROTC - but not vice versa. I'd be pleasantly surprised by a USNA appointment for my DS, as our Senator already announced his appointees from the two competitive slates he submitted and he was neither one. That means my DS is on the NWL and the competition there is brutal!

I am floored when I see what kids today are doing in HS and on standardized tests. DS will have 9 AP credits when he graduates; I saw someone above with 10. Unheard of in my day...

GoBlue, I agree, these kids and their stats are amazing and unbelievable! Much different then when we were in high school. I am so proud and encouraged that there are this many stellar students who want to serve our great nation, when in reality they could go almost anywhere and do anything! God Bless them! Makes me hopeful for our future in these uncertain times.

Hi Kinnem,
Thanks so much! I am sure we will need lots of help. I will mention your offer of help to my son and maybe he can get in touch with your son. I tried sending you a PM, but the site will not let me.

Great news on their Third Place Finish! That's awesome! Thanks again.
