Start checking NROTC portal!!

I haven't hear of anything yet, unfortunately. Should I be worried or does it just simply mean they haven't gotten to mine/made their decision about me yet?

It sometimes takes days to get the portal updated. If you haven't heard yet then you simply haven't heard. Keep working your plan B. DS was not notified of a negative decision until mid-April but plan B was ready to go and there was plenty of time to execute it. He is now an in-school Marine Option scholarship holder. There is more than one way to skin this cat.

pants116- If you're going for Marine-Option, I haven't heard anything and I don't think anyone else has. The officer I interviewed with said he hoped to have "good news for [me] by the end of March", but I don't know if that's a deadline of some sort or just his best guess. Good luck- I know the waiting is hard.

I was hoping for Navy Option.
Kinnem - I am curious - you mean he hear negatively about Navy Option but is now in school doing Marine Option? How did he manage that? But congrats to him on being able to find another way to skin the cat :p

When did you apply?

Kinnem's son originally applied for the NROTC MC Option, he did not receive the scholarship, he joined NROTC MC as a College Programmer and was recently awarded a NROTC MC Side Load Scholarship.

I had everything to my recruiter in December I think it was. He didn't tell me that my teachers could do recommendations online and I was never prompt for that anywhere, so he gave me packets to give to my teachers and get back to him. I was done with that around Thanksgiving, Interview with an Officer was early December, and from then on I just waited.

I was originally set on Naval Academy, but really wish that I spent more time on NROTC and did it first not only because I didn't get into the Academy, but I started to realize that I'd be significantly happier in a University with NROTC. I really want to fly and I've had a dream of being an officer for quite some time. I will manage a plan b if I find a good one, but so far I haven't :\

You need to consider becoming a college program nrotc at a school you would enjoy. DS is a 3rd year at a great university and was awarded a 2 year scholarship after turning down USNA. He never applied to nrotc while in high school. He is now filling out wish list for service assignment. Pilot or EOD for him. He just returned from spring break in Park City Skiing with 10 frat buddies. Yea he is having fun. Time goes very quickly.

What do you mean becoming a college program nrotc? Congrats to him, I hope he gets the one he wants!

In short, its like a walk on for college sports. Do a search thru this site, there is alot of info available. You participate in all activities that the scholarship students do except for the summer cruise and you dont get the stipend. Perform well and you get a scholarship.

No, he applied NROTC Marine Option. As I recall he didn't complete his application until mid-October, but whenever it was I do know it was in time for the first Marine Board. He was notifies that he wasn't selected and had a chance to update his application.

To expand on Terp's post:

If you're interested in participating in NROTC at your college without the scholarship you should contact the unit and let them know once you've decided to go to that college. Most schools allow enrollment in classes long before school starts. The real trigger to enroll in NROTC is to enroll in both the first Naval Science class as well as the Naval Lab. When you contact the unit they should be able to let you know what the specific courses are at your college. They will send you some paperwork to let you know when to report for orientation and what to bring (if there is anything special, orientation is changing at least at some schools). There will also be a physical you will need to have your own doctor perform. There is some paperwork you sign when you get to the unit.

As a college programmer, as terp says, you participate equally with those on scholarship except you don't get the stipend or any other money. You also do not get to go on the summer cruises. You do get all the same training, uniforms, leadership opportunities, etc. You also have to complete the same academic requirements. Beginning second semester of your freshman year, and each semester until your junior year, you can apply for an in-school (more commonly referred to as a sideload) scholarship. It's a national competition just like the 4 year high school scholarship. Your SAT/ACT scores are still taken into account along with your college GPA and the CO's recommendation. If you don't win a scholarship you at least have to be approved to continue in the program beginning your junior year. This is called Advanced Standing and will entitle you, at that point, to the stipend and summer training.

It can be a good plan B leading to a commission.

Thank you all so much for this input, you have been great.

I'm killing myself checking 20 times a day...I just want really want to know...I do appreciate the help so much though

Status finally changed from "Your application is being processed at the Naval Service Training Command..." to "Your application has been processed" and it tells me all of my items are in and it shows me my school choices. For Selection Status is just says no decision has been made.

After everything has been processed, how long does it usually take for an answer? Is it still random, at any time, or does this mean I'm close to knowing??

Thank you for your help!

I've got to think we should be hearing any time now... but DS's portal has said everything has been processed for a couple of months and has consistently just said "no decision has been made." I'm trying to take solace in the "no news is at least no bad news" idea, but I'm so anxious to hear something. I swear waiting for my own college letters (far too long ago) was nothing like waiting for this, and that was before we had internet and portals to check every day!

Hey all, just wanted to ask how you've been notified of your acceptance or denial. My local scholarship coordinator has not really been clear and I have heard conflicting information as to how it will be done. Thanks so much!

Still waiting to hear too sdlax - are you also in San Diego? Had been thinking no news is good news, but the later it gets the less likely it seems. I'm wondering now about the timing for medical IF the scholarship is granted, seems like that's a long drawn out process.

I have been wondering the same...about squeezing the medical exam in...but I gotta believe that no news is still good news, with some applicants having already been turned down.

Following the November board, my DS received a call from the Captain in charge of our district advising him that he was not awarded a scholarship and would be reboarded. On March 22, he received a call from the same Captain with the good news that he had been awarded the NROTC-MO scholarship. On Tuesday, March 26th, his portal changed and included the school assignment. He also received an email that same day. On Friday, March 29, he received his DodMERB paperwork via mail. The waiting is so hard and I hope you get some news soon.
