Still Haven't Heard! AROTC Scholarship

I'm going to have to change my name to Obsessivelaxmom8! I've checked many times already today. I think I need an intervention. Not sure how much more I can take.

If he does not get an offer, I am assuming they will post that on the status page, too? I just need to know one way or another and I'm hoping they will give us that courtesy. My son has sent emails ( a while back, maybe a month or so) to CC and the ROO and PMS at his school and not even gotten any sort of response. Sort of surprised by that.

I am so feeling your pain! I'm just so glad that DS got into his #1 choice for school, and it's instate. One way or another, it will all work out ...

Big envelope in the mail today from Alabama! Offered a type 2 for technical major (Mechanical Engineering, want to double major with Aeronautical)! Accepted to and attending the University of Florida! Oh crap, saw the "A" and clicked. This is an AFROTC scholarship...Sorry!

DS status just changed!! Received scholarship notification, but not to first choice school that he has committed to play lacrosse at next year. What should his next step be? I assume we should call ROO or MSP at first choice school? Is there anything that can be done to transfer the scholarship? And do you apply for transfer through CC or through the first choice school? I am so happy for him, but so disappointed that we now have something else to contend with. Ugh! So proud of my boy!!

First off, Congratulations to your son.

Looks like this board will be getting real busy soon.

First thing to do is to contact the ROTC battalion at the school he wants to attend and talk to them. The transfers are done through CC. Clarkson has some great posts about transfers if you search through his posts.

Is the school he wants in the same brigade as the school he was awarded the scholarship.
Is the cost of the school he wants more or less then the one awarded to.
These are some of the things that can effect a transfer as well as whether the school he wants has room for more cadets.

One other question, when your son's status page changed did it also list the school he received the scholarship on the same page, if so, that's something new and could be why it took longer to see a status change.

Good Luck and again, Congratulations to your son.

Laxmom thanks and congratulations!!!

Right after I saw your post I checked DS status page and OMG....:shake: THERE IT WAS....AN ARMY ROTC SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO DS!!!! This certainly is HAPPY HAPPY NEWS!!! The scholarship is to The Ohio State University - where a whole bunch of money is already being poured into via DS's older brother who is a sophomore there (the sophomore was an NROTC college programmer (Marine) for his first year and a half there, but was awarded PLC in January!!!). What an amazing journey this has been and willl continue to be!!! So thanks for posting the alert and CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUR DS!!!!!

Congratulations to your DS! When my DS status changed to receive his scholarship, we were so happy as well. We just assumed it was a 4 year paid scholarship, however when we received the big envelop in the mail and read the letter, it is for 3 year AD. We pay for the first year. With the grants we are receiving and hopefully a few scholarships he has applied for, it will be affordable for us the first year. We were surprised about hearing of a 3 year award, but we'll take it. So competitive this year, especially with the budget cuts. Please let us know the type of scholarship you receive.
We're going to open house at his college at the end of the week and meeting his ROO. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, CA

In the past when they did not list the school on the first status change the ROO's were not supposed to contact the applicants are give them any info regarding what schools they were awarded. Since the schools are now listed I wonder if they could contact the ROO at the school and find out which type of scholarship they received. I'm sure Clarkson will chime in soon and say if that's possible.

We see the offers, but we were told to hold tight till the letters are received. Might want to wait for the letter, but call the ROO...she/he knows the deal.

This is last year's guidance, but the process is essentially the same this year. Make sure to keep the gaining and losing schools in the loop, but you'll submit your request to Cadet Command, with the letter of acceptance.

Does anyone have a phone number for CC that would lead to a person? My DS is waiting for resolution of a 4-yr scholarship transfer (discussed in a prev. thread) and would like to call CC but is only getting voice mail.

I would imagine CC is very busy right now. Getting a person on the other end of the phone at CC has always been a challenge, it will be even harder now that they are in the middle of releasing the results from the final board.

Have you talked to the ROO at the school you are trying to have the scholarship transferred.

Yes, he has been in contact with the school. They have been encouraging but unable to provide an answer so he was thinking a call to CC may be beneficial. It has been a long process as original scholarship was awarded Jan. 30th.

email...train2lead@usacc.army.mil...There should also be a POC on some of the letters you received from CC with a phone number. 6 people processing 10K applications. Talk to the ROO if you can't wait.

If he's committed (D1 type commit - Scholarship?) then I guess that is where he is going? Or is it possible to switch to the ROTC scholarship school and play there without running afowl of some rule?

OOS publics are tougher to get ROTC scholarships to than in-state, especially schools in VA. Perhaps you should talk to the ROO/PMS at his first choice to see what his options may be. There may be a long waiting list already of kids who have put in for transfer to that school.

Transfers will have to go through CC, but it doesn't hurt to find out what the landscape may look like.

Both first and second choice schools are out of state publics, one in PA one in VA(first choice). The first choice school in VA is actually less expensive than the second choice in PA. DS definitely wants to play lacrosse at first choice school even though it's Div III with no scholarship, so that is the only school he wants to attend. He has been admitted there. We will definitely plan on making some phone calls tomorrow morning.

If this unit is like my daughter's, they put a high priority on getting varsity athletes. If he is a genuine recruit, don't be shy about mention that to the cadre. They should let you know where things are with regards to possible scholarship becoming available (if they've got a recipient who may be heading off to WP or whatnot). You should also find out if they've had campus based scholarships to award this year, as that would be an indicator of whether that might be an option going forward. No promises here as every year is different, but if there hasn't been any recently, no use in getting hopes up too high.

Best of luck from another D3 athlete parent.

Thanks for the info. I will have my son call first thing tomorrow morning and find out what can be done.

What a wild ride this has been. And continues to be...

Before making phone calls or trying to transfer, etc, I would recommend waiting until you get the letter in the mail with the official scholarship options.

Two months ago, my DD's portal changed to only one school. When she received the letter, it listed three schools. I believe this happened to several people. So before you start worrying about transfers, wait for the official notification. You may not need a transfer.

Wow! That is great information and promising news!! Would the ROO be able to see the multiple offers and would they be able to give us the information about that? This really gives us hope that we may be able to work this out. DS really wants to commit to AROTC and be a varsity athlete, thinking this will be exceptional preparation for becoming an Army officer.
How long would you estimate that it will take to get the letter? And how long do you have to respond, and get the DODMERB completed?

The ROO's used to be able to see which schools the scholarships were awarded, whether they will tell you is another thing but it wouldn't hurt to ask. I would first call the school he wants to attend and ask the ROO at that school.

It depends on how long it takes CC to update all the status pages as to when the letter arrives, shouldn't be more the 1 1/2 weeks from the time you were notified, maybe a bit longer if it takes a while to update.
