Still waiting?

Runningman, my son and I would like to hear your opinion on VT as well. We are going down next week for the overnight visit. How do you expect the Tech experience in the Corps (if you were ROTC as well) would be different than any ROTC unit?

So, when I called my counselor last week, he told me that a load of TWEs would be arriving in mailboxes this week. And unfortunately... I guess he was right. However, my counselor also said that I would not be receiving a TWE this week since my application was still under review.

I know none of us really have the authority to answer this question, but are they actually still reviewing applications? I don't understand how they just threw out that 1,285 admitted statistic and said that the "selection process is essentially over" when many other candidates and I are (hopefully) still in the running.

Talked with Admissions Office yesterday afternoon. A lot of TWE's went out and as most have, as evidenced by other posters on this forum, been received. However they are still making decisions and all letters TWE, appointments, Prep school offers will be out the door on April 15th. For those still waiting , No news is good news, at least for now.

Keep the faith and your chin up.

You need to realize that the air force academy has more than 50 years of experience with giving appointments. Normally, they will give out around 1700 appointments; KNOWING that about 300+ are going to turn it down. Of course, they are conservative and usually a few more will turn it down than they expected. Thus, they go to the wait list and offer some late appointments. So, if they sent out 1700 appointments, expecting 350 to decline, and they have 4500 on the wait list, (All Ranked in order of their final score), they can safely send out TWE's to at least 4000 of those. The other 500 probably will get the TWE also, but their scores are high enough that there is a possibility that if TOO many turn down their appointments, they could dip into those highest few hundred. Again, the academy has been doing this for more than 50 years. They have it pretty well figured out. And with today's economy, LESS are turning down the appointments than normal. So that's even less from the wait list. best of luck. mike....

Thank you for the clarification, Christcorp. I guess at this point it's time that I just step back and wait. And if I don't make it this year, I have a plan B in place that I'm sure will help me when I reapply next year.

Bendaddy Im with you on this one to. I have just been waiting and waiting. I don't know if its a good thing that we haven't heard yet, but whatever happens I know will be good. Just keep that in mind.

Also, if you didn't pick it up from some of our other posts, the wait list isn't TOTALLY based on your composite score. It's also about WHO TURNS DOWN their appointment. I.e. out of 4000 on the wait list, you could be ranked #150 from the top. HOWEVER, you could be the 1st person on the wait list offered an appointment. HOW? you might ask. If a person who turns down their appointment happens to be from your congressional district, and you were next on your congressman's nomination list, they would offer it to you. No one else in the country, from any other district OR state, can have that slot. ONLY you and others on your MOC's slate. Maybe you had a presidential nomination, along with about 500 other applicants. The academy can only offer 100 appointments with that nomination. Maybe one of those 100 appointees turns it down. You could be next on that list and be offered an appointment. Only those authorized a presidential nominee can compete for those slots. "Granted, presidentials are done very early in the year and are pretty well finalized, but some do turn it down towards this time of year because they accepted another academy or their dream university".

Point is, you can get a headache trying to figure out all the in's and out's of the process; where you stand in the process; and all the possibilities. If you got the TWE, then I would definitely move on to plan "B". If you get lucky enough to get an appointment later this or next month, then that's good. And if you lose a few hundred dollars on deposits you made for dormintory and such, so be it. You're saving at Minimum; $50,000 in tuition, room, and board. (Average State University for 4 years).

Also; for anyone who received the TWE and is still interested in the academy; get ready to reapply. You have the advantage of knowing the process. There is absolutely NO LEGITIMATE REASON you can give for not having your application for the class of 2015 100% completed, turned in, physical completed, CFA completed, teacher's recommendations completed, and all transcripts on file; NO LATER THAN July 30th. No excuse whatsoever. You know the process. You know what there is to do. Do it, get it done by July, then start your freshman year at college and enjoy yourself. The only thing you'll have to prepare for will be your MOC's interview for a nomination. And that isn't usually until the end of fall. You know that process too. If you are applying for the 2nd time. YOU HAVE BROWNIE POINTS with the board. If you are 100% complete with the application and are on the list of applications to be reviewed by the VERY FIRST BOARD at the end of September; YOU HAVE BROWNIE POINTS. If your application is done in July, and your academy counselor and ALO see your motivation; YOU HAVE BROWNIE POINTS. If you wait until late fall/early winter to do your application and everything, then no one will remember who you are or anything about you. Best of luck. Mike.....

Please correct me if I'm wrong but your DODMERB physical is good for two years so that's one time consuming item already complete if you're reapplying for 2015.

D&D; I believe you are correct about that. However, rules change so much, that the best place to ask that by someone who received the TWE, would be with their counselor while they still have their attention. Might be able to see what other areas are good to go.

OBVIOUSLY, you have graduated from High School, but haven't started college yet. So, if you can arrange the same info from your high school teachers from last year, that should be quick. Same with retaking SAT/ACT if a person wanted to. "Depends on their scores. Those might be high enough, and you might not need to retake them." College classes won't really count until semester is over in December. So everything is basically going to be based on your high school grades. mike.....

Christcorp, I had a quick question. If I got a 1320 SAT (670 Math and 650 Critical Reading), should I retake the SAT again if I am applying to the Academy again next year?
Big Red and Sarah. As soon as I got home from VT, I had to go out of town to see my grandmother. It is her 70th birthday! I will pm you a more detail view of what I thought when I get back late tomorrow. However, here is a quick view. I talked to a few of the cadets while I was there and from what I gathered, it is no where near as bad as what I thought it would be like. We were preparing for the Academy and this as well as regular ROTC programs don't come close to that difficulty. It may be a little more difficult than your average ROTC program but that because it used to be a military institute. Our dream is to be officers in the USAF, nothing expecially a little difficulty can stand in our way. Also, the campus is beautiful and the food is great (3 in nation)!!

Except for a few dollars, you don't lose anything from takin the ACT/SAT again. The academy will take the higher score from each section. I.e. If you scored a 650 on math this time, and a 600 next time, they keep the 650. And if the first time the reading was 600 and the 2nd time was 650, they'll take the 2nd time's scores. So, unless it's a financial thing and you really can't afford it, you can never be penalized to continue retaking the ACT/SAT. Mike....

So, Son got the MWE this weekend, medium white envelope-not an appointment, but not a total rejection, he was offered a Falcon Foundation scholarship. He was honored, but is sticking with his decision of accepting his USNA acceptance. Our family of USAFA grads (DS's Grandpa, Uncle, Mom, Dad, and 2 cousins all USAFA grads) find it ironic that USNA offered him an appointment way back in October, and USAFA waits till April to offer him a Falcon Foundation Scholarship. Guess he'll be forging his own path!

and USAFA waits till April to offer him a Falcon Foundation Scholarship

Unfortunately, maybe that's the best they could offer. That's the problem with academy appointments. The best we can know is what we put on the application. We have no way of comparing it to the other applicants in our district, state, or the rest of the country. When we find out we received a nomination, except for the few MOC's who list "Principle" nominees, we don't know how the rest of the nominations stand. When we receive a presidential nomination, we forget that the air force can only give 100 appointments based on that nomination, even though there are approximately 500 applicants with a presidential nomination. Just like a MOC can give 10 nominations, yet usually only 1 can be offered an appointment.

You have a long family history of air force academy graduates. And now, you have a Navy academy graduate in the making. Either way, it's a great military history in your family with a lot of selfless service by your family. But without knowing the status, resumes, applications, and total scores of the close to 10,000 other air force academy applicants, it's quite difficult to second guess anything about the academy. Especially any of the whys or whens. The academies are bound by certain numbers and quotas that they must follow by federal law. Most of which are not negotiable. Either way, you son should be honored to be attending Navy, and we definitely thank him for being willing to serve his country. Best of luck to him. Let him know however that Air Force WILL KICK NAVY'S BUTT this fall in football, and we WILL win back the Commander in Chief's trophy. LOL!!! :thumb: Mike.....

So this week's definitely the week? It seems like every admissions representative has a different perspective on this "final" date - if there is such a date at all.

That post says "out the door on April 15th", this means you could not recieve it until monday as I did. (TWE dated April 1st, recieved April 5th)

We are extremely proud of him, and not at all bitter or second guessing USAFA an any way, there was a tremendous amount of highly qualified candidates and simply not enough slots to go around. His Dad was a preppy, and his Dad's boss went to a Prep school on a Falcon Scholarship and then still went to the USAFA prep school, and finally made it to USAFA, so we concider it a HUGE honor to be offered the Falcon Foundation Scholarship, and had it not been for the BFE from USNA, he wouldn't hesitate to accept it.

I am proudly repainting ONE of my cornhole boards with a goat/Navy blue, the falcon and Air Force Blue will remain on the other one--and am slowly getting use to saying "Go Navy"
Of course my '92 USNA grad next door neighbor is beaming!

DS still waiting - NJ appts 1/21 (MOC) & 2/1 (Senator) I can't wait until he has a different answer to the question "so have you heard from the Air Force Academy yet?"

I swear I've been asked that same question at least 5 times this week!
Best of luck to your son.

"Well,
the good news is that you didn't receive a letter yet.
All the candidates that were qualified but not accepted received their letters last week.

That means you are in the Prep School round.

Keep em flying.
:)

LtCol Staso..."

Got this e-mail from my ALO today. So if you're still waiting keep you're chin up!

Thanks USAFMortensen. Good to know! Just told DS that - he gave me that exasperated look again. I asked him today if he had called his Admissions Counselor, he said "No. I'll wait and find out the way I am meant to find out." Patience is a virtue, I know......I guess he lives it a little better than I do - good luck to everyone who is still waiting - keep the faith! :thumb:
