Stolen Valor Act ruled Unconstitutional

I have taken my children to that "WALL" on numerous occasions. They have looked up the location and made rubbings of the names of two of my best friends. They have them still. I teach them to respect the sacrifice those men made. No Law can make someone respect others or their sacrifice. People have been claiming honors they did not deserve since the revolutionary war. When they use those claims to defraud they should be punished but just claiming them only makes them wannabees and worthy of scorn and distain. Yes I would give anything to be able to get each of those names a mirror and the ability to gaze into it every morning.

The Kids loved the MREs during the Memorial Day Parade. They used to set them up and have a picnic while the parade went by. Bought them outside the gate at Cherry Point every summer and saved them. Eating out of a cardboared box was a lot worse. :thumb:

I still don't recommend a lip of Sanka

I am sure that they were always a big step above C's, but MRE's were not that great when they first came out. They used to contain a lot of dehydrated food, like the "beef patty." They also had no heaters, se we ate everything cold. A partially rehydrated beef patty in cold water was no treat. A LOT of meals, regardless of the main item, included beans as the side. I had no problem downing cold beans, but a lot of people did. They have come a long way since then!

In the summer of 2000, USMA still had a bunch of the old ones. I distinctly remember sitting in the rain at the grenade range, eating my dessert: a bag of Olympic M&Ms emblazoned with "Calgary '88!"

That's funny...or sad, depending on your outlook.

FYI, M&M's are, themselves, a fairly recent addition to MREs. Back in the "old" days, there was no dessert. The only pseudo-candy in MREs was the gum (which was, of course, just there to clean your teeth, not add enjoyment). When the first added Charms, we thought we were in Heaven. :yay:

Back in the day, there was an item called a LRP. I think it was a predecessor to the MRE, which I have never eaten. However, I did live on C-Rats and LRPs for a year. It's amazing what a Vietnamese mamasan hooch maid can do to those things. Between spicing them up, literally, and trading the unpopular portions for fresh local produce, it was quite palatable. One thing with the dehydrated LRPS, it would take them days to rehydrate, even after they were eaten, and not only the beans. A 'brass' music ensemble was not out of the question. Therefore, we preferred C-Rats whenever possible.

Sanka. Vietnam was prior to the current dipping craze. Never thought of it. We would just take a pocketful of packages, pop one open, down the contents, and wash it down with a drink from our canteen. I am having trouble visualizing a night ambush with eveyone dipping Sanka. Even in the humid putrid Vietnamese jungle, it would probably have smelledl like a Starbucks from downwind.

As an aside, they both came with little cardboard packages of four cigarettes. There may not have been any Calgary M & Ms but I saw cigarettes that had not been popular since the early '40s. Hence the trade items for local seafood and vegetables.

Well at least Lucky Strikes are user-friendly...smoke it from either end!

Oh wait, I forgot...there might be "lurkers" out there who've never heard of smoking. WHAT HAVE I DONE???

Mods - this thread can be closed as it is so far off track it doesn't look like it's coming back.

Everything that can possibly said to support each side has been proffered.

:lock:

Everything in those packages could be smoked from either end; Camels, Lucky Strikes, Chesterfields, L & Ms, Pall Malls, Phillip Morris, Old Golds, and a few others I forget. I think Kools were the only ones that had filters. Vietnamese loved those.

Yeah, and? Why should it be locked? The discussion you wanted happened. Just because we're done with it, that doesn't warrant locking anything. Sometimes it's just fun to BS.

Now we're trading stories about old rations. It's a military thing.

I thought you were a huge proponent of free speech. Just exercising my right.:thumb:

Open your own thread, then. As the OP, it is a common courtesy on this forum for a Mod to close a thread at the request of the OP.

We both know that "free speech" is not a right that exists at this forum, so your rebuttal is ridiculous.

Threads that go way off-topic are commonly closed by "the Mods" here.

Go ahead and open your own thread on MRE or military food.

Mongo and Scout. I swear, you two would argue about how many hairs are on a dog. I don't think I've seen a thread yet that you two didn't have a disagreement with one of the posters. Oh well, that's part of free speech too.

PM sent

I'm simply saying that if people are talking about an innocuous topic of military interest, why close a thread? Seems to me that posters posting posts is what this forum exists for, right?

I don't disagree with people. I disagree with points of view I think are ludicrous.

Because threads here that veer so far off-topic are regularly closed, especially at the request of the Original Poster.

Those who wish to continue the "new" topic are regularly requested to open a new thread with the new topic.

I have made that request.

Seriously?? I have not found this to be the case - it is in the rules somewhere. I need to check that out.
Sometimes the mods will close a thread in an Academy forum if it gets away but I bet most of the time threads are closed is when they get out of hand.
Perhaps this is your goal?

I must say, this has been a very enlightening discussion. I am not quite there on the consitutiionality of the Stolen Valor law but - I can understand the arguments.
Thanks for all of your thoughtful opinions and insight!

Too bad, because I was just about to post my thoughts about how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

I noticed this too.

Isn't it amazing how two combat veterans from different generations and branches of service have similar points of view and experiences?
Wow.
