    Strategic Sealift Officer Program
From: Strategic Sealift Officer Program Manager
Subject: Authorization to Wear the Strategic Sealift Officer Warfare Insignia

    SSOs,

The attached memo provides direction for the wearing and earning of the Strategic Sealift Officer (SSO) Warfare Insignia (WI). The SSO WI, unlike its predecessor, requires the completion of a Personnel Qualifications Standards (PQS) for newly commissioned officers. RESPERSMAN 1534-060 is being routed for signature and will provide policy superseding this memo upon release. All SSOs are directed to read the memo. No newly commissioned SSO will be authorized to wear the SSO WI, nor are any cadet/midshipmen authorized to wear the SSO WI. The former MMR qualifications insignia is no longer authorized for wear by any personnel, to include cadet/midshipmen. Questions are to be directed to the SSO Program Office.

    V/r

    LCDR Christopher M. Cassano, USN
    Strategic Sealift Officer Program Manager

More likely, it was a wanna-be who couldn't get his SWO pin and was jealous of the brand new ENS with pins.

A law that can not be enforced is not a law - Andrew Jackson

Well this seems like just one more fine “how do you do” to slam us maritime types in general, and KP’ers specifically.

So, anyone who ever managed to get a SWO pin can wear it forever – even if they have not done anything on a ship in 40 years. Yet those of us who proudly wore our USNR pins all these years are told we have to remove them?

Next time someone drags me out of retirement for a ceremony lets see if anyone has the b***s to rip mine off my chest.

If your willing to submit supporting documentation that you were in the MMR and held a license to the SSO Program office them the will authorize you to wear the new insignia.

In truth, its a poorly worded memo that shouldn't have been written. If the policy has not yet been approved, why is the good LCDR essentially issuing policy? The memo begs more questions than it answers.

I'm wearing the old one right now, and will just leave the old one on rather than send the program office documents that I have already sent them.....

So did the pull a thing like on the TV show Branded with the midshipman? Line everyone up and yank off the Badge?

Wait to you read the memo. New graduates won't be able to wear the new badge until they pass a PQS. Have fun with that.

In anticipation of this memo, I have been giving the subject much thought and find myself disheartened by another possible loss of tradition. A suggestion I would like considered by Admin: Mint a device for use by the USMMA Regiment which duplicates the heretofore discontinued sea chicken insignia, but replace the lettering "USNR" with "USMMA". Issue it upon completion of Indoc/acceptance weekend as part of Mids/Plebes uniform, as has historically be done with the USNR MMR device. Just something I offer for consideration...If adopted for use along with collar props/anchors, KP Mids could continue to be easily distinguished from NA mids and the cadets from the state academies.

As I understand, that is the plan.

Just once, it would be refreshing to have SOME administrator, SOMEwhere take over a program and say "you know, things are pretty much ok with this. I'm not going to change anything until something NEEDS to be changed."

Here, Here.......and a Yo, Ho, Ho

YOU WOULD THINK...... The best administrators I have had in 43 years of Teaching have had that Philosophy.................

It would be nice to have that TAUGHT once again in MANAGEMENT CLASSES.

If my Middle School classes can learn this, YOU WOULD THINK.........

    Just sayin'

My DD Navy Officer decided not to wear her Chicken so as not to 'show off'. She is waiting to get her SWO...opps SSO new pin. Until then, she wears her ribbons earned and will continue to wear her class ring. She says that gets a lot of attention anyway.

A comment this week when she was helping a Navy Academy graduate with the Rules of the Road......'.Did you see that TWINKLE in her eyes when she was helping ______?' Being the Ordnance Officer is OK, but the Deck and Nav brings back that twinkle...

It's not showing off and is no different than wearing any other warfare device. The pin is earned so wear it with pride. It shows an accomplishment and technical knowledge that few in the USN posses.

I'm not up on the info. What do midshipmen do to qualify for the "chicken?"

Rumor has it the Administration is going to allow the midshipman to keep wearing the sea chicken regardless of navy policy.

My statement was directed towards AC/RC members as anyone can earn the it regardless of commissioning source and background. Frankly, I'm not sure it is restricted to Officers. As is deliniated in the instruction, a current Unlimited License is required for a member to be authorized to wear the device.

M/N are mentioned specifically in the instruction and qualify to wear the device by virtue of being sworn in as M/N on Acceptance day.
