DS was turned down for NROTC tier III scholarship and has yet to hear from USNA, if the TWE comes, his plan C is to become a college programmer at one of his "navy" schools and reapply, should he be denied the scholarship a second time, I understand that he can continue on to commission if he passes screening for Advanced Standing. My question for anyone in the know, is, is there relief for federal student loans if he committs to the military after being denied the scholarship. I know that there are/were some programs in place where student loans were reduced or relieved for some federal govt. jobs-any thoughts?

    Navy Student Loan Relief

    Hello again nofodad.

Just so you can recreate what I did in hopes you can turn something up, I did a google search on 'military student loan relief'. Another good site to start at, that the search turned up is:
    http://www.military.com/Resources/ResourcesContent/0,13964,44245--,00.html

Based on what I read there is such a program, it doesn't really provide much relief ($1500.00 per year during first hitch), and is only open to enlisted personnel. So, unfortunately, it doesn't appear to help the NROTC college programmer at all. Of course, this wouldn't be the first time I misread something so it would be smart for you to double check me. If you uncover something I missed please let me know. Don't know if your DS still has any future visits planned to one of the units he is considering, but it would be a good question to ask the cadre if he does.

Still hoping you receive good news from USNA! :thumb:

Error in this post is corrected below. Relief is actually more substantial than I had listed.

    thanks

Duh, google search of course! thanks again! DS still has not heard from USNA, and the wait is getting tedious. We should hear about plan C school tomorrow, and if that turns out positive he will call the cadre of the NROTC unit on monday and express his desire to apply to be a college programmer, he met with them in January (on the way to Annapolis for his CVW) back when he had hoped for a scholarship. thanks again!

I'm not sure about NROTC but my DS who will commission in May via AROTC was able to get $25k for student loan repayment by extending his active duty commitment by one year

DS was contracted earning his Masters degree and the loan repayment was for undergrad loans he had prior to entering the AROTC program
