Stuff to bring on I-Day

Unfortunately, you probably won't be allowed a lighter. While extremely helpful in removing loose threads from your uniform, cadre can't let basics have or buy items that are sharp, highly flammable, or otherwise useful to hurt yourself or others. You'd be suprised...

You will, however, be issued nail clippers :thumb:

I don't think much would surprise me after 2 basics... xD

In enlisted basic, we had one guy go to our MTI saying "Ma'am, I think I'm going to kill myself."

MTI: "Well, how are you going to do it?"

Him: "Uhh.... I'm going to suffocate myself with a pillow"

MTI: "Nice try. You are going to pass out and lighten your grip on the pillow and start breathing again."

Him: "I'll hang myself with my boot laces."

MTI: "You're a ****ing idiot, aren't you? The laces won't hold your weight. Have you ever lived through someone killing themselves? It hurts. I personally have had friends kill themselves. Do you have family that would care about you?"

Him: "Ma'am, nevermind."

In enlisted basic, our nail clippers were taken because they were the kind that had the nail filer included and were therefore considered dangerous weapons.

So what EXACTLY do we need to bring besides the forms? I read on some checklist that toiletries such as shampoo, soap, etc is needed?

you need underwear, soap, a pen, envelopes, paper, stamps, and addresses. if you brought those things and nothing else you would make it. a suggestion is to bring a quality pair of toe nail clippers, if you dont know what for dont ask you will find out within a week, without the extra filler part apparently. also you get to pick your intramural sport most likely for basic so if youre going to pick something like soccer or flag football then bring a pair of cleats, but thats not a big deal and not something to run out and go buy.

as well as some way to shave for men and brush your teeth.

then there is a whole list of stuff you could bring to make your life easier
compression shorts (NOT contraband)
boot/body powder
some religious text if you’d like
cleats
shampoo (i only out that on this list because you hardly get much time for showers and the priority is the body not the hair, especially since there is so little of it left for us guys)
preprinted address labels (considering how little time you have to write letters if the envelope already has the address and stamp on it and is just a peel and seal it saves you a little time)

Another question, are small personal keepsakes allowed? Such as wallet sized photos or a journal?

I thought our own underwears were contraband and we had to wear the issued ones. Whats the best way to safe keep the stationary? Will the cadre let you keep a box or something to hold all the paper, envelopes, stamps and pen in?

Bring some 2-in-1 shampoo and body wash. At least then you can throw it all over and get some cleanliness.

Depends on your cadre.

You will have a lock drawer to store your stationary etc. Can't hurt to bring a folder or something if you want it more organized.

Also realize that you will get issued stamps, envelopes and paper (or at least I did). If you plan on writing a lot, bring some more, but otherwise what you're issued will be sufficient.

no you are allowed to have your own underwear. if it is in your bag and you get separated from the bag tell your cadre and they will go find it, eventually. took me almost until jack’s to get it but i kept asking and boy am i happy i did.

yes there is a place to keep materials for writing letters. if i recall they give everyone some stationary, stamps, and envelopes but i went through all of that quickly.

Is there a size restriction on personal stationary? For example would standard college-ruled notebook paper be ok?

Don't worry about paper zie -- notebook paper is fine. Each time I sent our daughter a letter, I included a piece of notebook paper and a self addressed stamped envelope so that she didn't have to search for paper, envelope or stamp. We sent her to Basic with writing paper, envelopes, stamps, etc. but she couldn't always put her hands on those things when she had a second to write -- thus the paper and return envelope. Now there is the new cool service that allows you to send an email which gets delivered to your Basic as a letter (see WebGuy main page). We didn't have that 3 years ago.

most definitely for guys

they let me keep every pair i brought

That's not the norm. We've been instructed to take away anything not on the "bring this" list, except maybe compression shorts. Guys are issued underwear. Do you really want to carry around extra weight tomorrow?

Just bring what is on the list. Everything else you could possibly need in basic (everything from chapstick and sunscreen, to stationary and stamps, to socks and a mouthguard) will be issued to you. The less you bring, the better.

The only deviation I would make is to bring a watch. It will be taken from you tomorrow and stored with your other valuables in a locked room. Your bag will be returned to you after basic, and you will immediately want a watch for the school year.

Can someone please further identify which forms these are, I would like to confirm they are in my portfolio and I can't identify them yet: 1042, CPHA Screening, TSWF Encounter

Sorry falcongirl couldn't agree less. Run the risk and bring compression shorts. I'd say it's crucial and any male cadre is not going to take them. They know your pain. I'd pack baby powder for chaffing as well. It's gon a be rough, an it's hotter than last summer.

A suggestion

You might need the Encyclopedia, since you won't have the Internet, but since it might make bags too heavy if each appointee brings a whole set, just bring the volume that starts with the same letter as your last name. There should be a pretty even distribution of volumes across the squadron that way, and all the backpacks will weigh about the same. It's not on the Bring List, but you MIGHT need it!!

I hope that made somebody laugh . . . :shake: Please don't be offended, as my intent was just to make you laugh a little.

Now if you are an appointee, stop stressing about minor things like nail clippers and stationery. There's a list of forms to bring somewhere on the forum already. Once you get that info, get yourself some ice cream and watch a Will Ferrell movie or some Tosh.O. Try to relax!
