I would like to suggest that when a thread deviates off topic the moderators have the authority to delete those posts.
It is hard to continue a discussion on a topic when folks insist on taking the conversation out into left field.
I think this would be a better option than locking the thread and shutting down an interesting discussion.

Concur! And we're talking WAY OFF topic, because slight deviations have a way of correcting themselves.

I agree, we've lost some good discussions because of a few off-topic comments.

Thank you for the suggestion, I think I like that idea and we will consider it as a tool for moderation. Please note that in order for this to work, we will need the cooperation of our members. That is, simply notify a moderator that the thread is being taken off-topic so that it can be dealt with, and perhaps post a simple message asking that the thread remain on topic. If abusive posting occurs in a thread, it makes it much more difficult to identify the good guys and the bad guys, and as such in those instances locking the thread becomes the only reasonable course of action.

That sounds good, TN. I agree with the others. WAMom posted a fantastic thread with a very relevant topic, and we lost it to political debate. What JAM suggested would be awesome.

Right, I think the WAMom thread should be reopened with the far off topic posts (including mine) be deleted. It was a good thread.

I agree. Although this seems funny to me because those posts that were deleted were in the..."Off Topic" section...hahaha.

I took the suggestions and did a bunch of pruning and reopened the post- Try and keep it on topic and civil though ok? WAMom really posted something that should be very thought provoking- try not to trash it with off topic meandering. If you want to post about the President- the Past President- the color of money etc... Start a thread in the Off Topic forum not the Academy Military news forum!!
Thanks folks
