Does anyone have suggestions for what to do as a parent during my son's candidate visit on 20-22 Jan? I have on post accommodations.

Thanks

I recommend the West Point museum outside Thayer gate. You can spend several hours in there if you like history. Take the metro-north train down to NYC during the day and see some sights or a broadway show. If you like motorcycles, Orange County Choppers is not far, you can find directions on their website.

You will definitely want to attend the briefing and tour given for parents the first morning of the visit. After that, depending on your personal interests, I have several suggestions:

http://www.amazon.com/Campus-Guides-Point-Military-Academy/dp/1568982941 is a great guide with several walking tours of West Point. I had been going for several years before I found this book, and I was startled at how many things I had walked by multiple times without ever seeing.

If you want to get out and away here are some resources for the area surrounding West Point:

Orange County (where West Point is) http://www.orangetourism.org/
Rockland County (directly south) http://www.rockland.org/
Dutchess County (across the river) http://www.dutchesstourism.com/
Putnam County (across the river) http://www.visitputnam.org/
Westchester County (across the river) http://www.tourism.westchestergov.com/
Sullivan County (north of West Point) http://www.catskills.com/

My personal favorite is Cold Spring, a neat little village with great shopping and restaurants across the river.

For a first visit, the museum and the map room at the Academy library (which is not on the usual tour list) are both worth it. For third or fourth (keep your fingers crossed!), a 30-minute drive to Beacon,NY up the Hudson has some of the best modern art in the country at the Dia Foundation.

What is appropriate attire for the parents on a January visit?
