I'm flying in from California on April 25th on a red-eye with a projected arrival time at 10am at BWI.
I know the email for the CVW says not to arrive any earlier than 5:30pm for check in, but does anyone have any suggestions as to to what to do for almost 6 hours? Would it be wise to explore Annapolis before heading to the Academy, or should I just hang out at the airport for a shuttle to take me there?

Downtown Annapolis on a spring day vs. BWI airport. Hmmmm...

Go walk around downtown. Plenty of places to sit down and watch the world go by on Main St. or Dock St. while you text or snapchat your friends, as well as eat ice cream at either Kilwin's or the Annapolis Ice Cream store. Walk onto the USNA Yard, go to the Visitor Center (if you haven't already done so on any other visits), watch the film, get the map, take a self-guided tour. Watch the mids go to class and athletic practice as an outside observer, watch noon formation in T-Court if they have it, soak up the general feel and layout. Go into the Museum and enjoy the exhibits. Grab a relatively inexpensive sandwich, burger or slice of pizza at the Drydock, the snack bar in Dahlgren Hall, open to visitors. Downtown has places to eat too.

The point of the CVW is to learn more about USNA, to either reinforce or further inform your decisions about whether this particular service academy and you suit each other. DTA, "Downtown Annapolis," is part and parcel of midshipman life. Make the most of your time there. And enjoy!

Thanks for the suggestions! I think my main concern is just having to lug around my stuff the whole time. But I take it that the experience of Downtown Annapolis would negate the hassle of doing so.

coffee shops

Some good coffee shops downtown to sit and take it all in. short walk from the yard

Go to Chick and Ruths and get the #1!!! Then walk down to gate 1 and walk the campus. You will see a ton of mids working out at this time. Go to the visitors center and spend some money. Lots of good stuff!

food

Chick and Ruth is to die for. That place was awesome. My daughter and I ate there for her CVW.

Sorry, but Chick and Ruth's is disgusting. I insisted we go when we were visiting Annapolis last summer. The food didn't taste bad, but that place is filthy! There are years worth of grease and dust caked on anything out of easy reach.

We ended up sitting upstairs, and I couldn't believe the place ever passed any kind of health or safety inspection. The stairs were more like a ladder than a staircase - steep, shallow treads and narrow.

Seriously, my skin crawls just thinking about that place.

I'll keep these places in mind. The weather is looking pretty gloomy for next weekend (showers on Thursday, with some sun on Friday and Saturday). I don't know about walking around in the rain, but I really would like to see some of the sights. If anything, I might visit Sofi's Crepes :p

I too am going to the CVW, My flight gets in at 11:30.

My plan is to go sit on a bench and look out at the harbor for a little while. I haven't seen the ocean in three years!

I haven't seen the ocean in three years!

Hate to be the one to break it to you, but you won't see the "ocean" in Annapolis. You'll see the Severn River and a bit of the Chesapeake Bay, but it's a ways to the ocean.

However, it is water and it is beautiful!

Oh, I know it's technically not the "ocean", but it certainly beats the Mississippi River.
