Summer assignments at USMA?

"Sapper School - This very specialized training in engineering [breeching operations patrolling, etc.] is afforded to a very limited number of Cadets each year. To qualify, Cadets must complete a pre-qualification course during the second semester of their Yearling year. This school is physically and mentally demand and lasts about four weeks. Upon completion the Cadet will be awarded a Sapper tab but this will not be worn until they have their Army Class A's."

So you cannot wear it while you're at West Point, but you do earn the tab, and for the rest of your career you are Sapper qualified.

I know that you can earn it. What I was saying is that you can complete the course and pass but not accumulate enough points to earn the tab.

So America's finest, do you know whether or not there are any CBRN schools or courses that can be taken during the summer?

I know this might come off as a very noob question, but I'm wondering what the purpose of all these summer schools are for? Aside from being "fun", how do they help you in the short or long run? Do they cost money? How many of these summer assignments are required to graduate (is there such a graduation requirement)?

As far as i know, all they do are benefit your future army career! If you have all these extra schools (airbourne, sapper, etc) your CO will recognize that because it will all go on your service record (which can only help your career -promotions, assignments, duty stations. etc)

Also these schools would provide experience to be around the regular army as a cadet.

If i'm wrong someone correct me!!

you can wear a Sapper tab, that you earned while you are a cadet, while you are a cadet

You can wear a Sapper Tab earned as a cadet both while you are a cadet and on active duty. Once you have earned it, you have earned it... same with the other Army schools...

We were just going off the website.

A cadet would have to give you details but there are summer requirements cadets need to complete in their 4 years. The little I do know is that they must do at least one detail (leadership position for SLS, Beast, Buckner, etc) and one "school" (such as air assualt, airborne, etc).

Not sure where they got the info for the website, but this is a great example of not believing everything you read. I confirmed today both through cadets and staff at USMA that the Sapper tab is authorized for wear on the cadet uniform at West Point, as well as on active duty after graduation. :thumb:

I don't think it's new since it was definitely the case back 25 years ago when I was there. But everything goes in cycles, so there may be times when they've offered/required different options. When I was there the summer before cow (2nd class) year, EVERYONE had to do either DCP (Drill Cadet Program) or CTLT (Cadet Troop Leader Program) - being out in the Army in a unit either as a drill instructor or a "3rd" Lieutenant (shadowing a 2LT). Nearly everyone also did a school, although some people both this year and the following year arranged VST's (voluntary summer training - this could be nearly anything - I spent 6 weeks working in research at the Pentagon which was just incredible!).

Summer before firstie year, EVERYONE had to do either cadre at Beast or Buckner. At that point SLS (then called IAW) was a volunteer cadre program. You were given extra leave to actually leave before graduation and go home then, and then came back to work the program (only one session offered then too). You'd still have had to do CBT or CFT as cadre. But I know it's changed now so you have entering firsties doing kind of a phase 2 CFT (Buckner) and so that you have cows working as cadre for CBT and (yearling) CFT.

Well, this is new...didn't know you had to do an SLS/CBT/CFT...thought it was optional.

I doubt it is new. Everyone needs a leadership detail. A lot of people apply for CCBT since it is a lot shorter than the rest meaning longer leave.

No, I mean new info to me...another question: do you get assigned to either SLS/CBT/CFT/CTLT(leading real soldiers) or do you get a choice, cause if so, I would rather do CTLT?

Everything in the Army works the same way. You put in preferences but aren't guaranteed anything 100%. CTLT isn't one of the competitive ones so don't worry.

And you could do both of those if you wanted.

Hey AF,DS loved his CCBT Cadre. We were lucky enough to meet them and have dinner the evening before "R" Day at the table next to them, ask my DS what they called him the next day lol

Hint, it was a restaurant name :yllol:

Stupid question because I should know this, but what is CCBT? I know CBT, but not with the extra C!

I'll have to ask him. :shake:

Cadet Candidate Basic Training

aka

USMAPS CBT

Ah thanks, guess that wasn't an option when I was there. :thumb:

But if you did this it would take care of your required leadership detail, right? Also, why isn't it competitive?

It's a requirement. If it was competitive, nobody would graduate. There are a ton of units open for CTLT so many slots are available. The only thing that could be competitive would be getting a particularly popular unit.
