So the results for the summer seminar 2013 come out tommorow! (I'm super nervous :yllol: ) This year there are so many competive applicants they had to push back the descion date. Yikes. Anyways so I thought I would make a thread for people who have gotten accepted and which session they plan to attend.

Ahhhh I'm so excited. I couldn't sleep last night, I can't even imagine what tonight will be like!

It's gonna be Suuper exciting! Please write which week you are going to do as well!

I can't wait! Anyone have any idea when they will send out the emails? Morning, Evening?

any word on how many applied, how many will be accepted?

USAFA will "eventually" inform ALO's of this number but unless they choose to release it on their FB page...it'll be kept confidential.

Yes does anybody know when they will email us? Just so I'm not checking every 5 minutes! I wonder if this is the first time they've had to push the date back due to the number of quality applications sent in.

I don't mean to burst your bubble, but I'm pretty sure the real reason the date was pushed back is that they don't yet know how many slots they will have due to the sequester. I am also sure there is probably a record number of quality candidates further compounding the problem.

Sorry I didn't mean to suggest that my application was totally awesome. I'm a long shot in getting into the seminar. I was just going on with what I read in the email they sent us.

Oh, my comment had nothing to do with your personal application. And I bet it is awesome!!! :thumb:

well whatever happens we offer best wishes to everyone. I know our daughter is a long shot for Summer Seminar and to get in. But as I tell the kids I coach, if you dont try.... you fail before you started. We applied for Navy and Coast Guard Summer Seminars also, she is really determined. But when she visited the Air Force last year and talked to some female cadets she looked at the grounds and said that for the first time she saw where she fitted in this world. If she dont get in, I know she wont stop trying. Just trying, I have pride in her.

Good luck!

Good luck to all of you summer seminar applicants! My DS had such a wonderful experience there last summer and still keeps in touch with friends he made. The time goes by so quickly - now we are waiting to hear if he will receive an appointment for the class of 2017.

Best wishes! :thumb:

3rd go around for me. My youngest applied this year for SS. Kudos to all applicants. One should not worry if they aren't accepted, it the long range picture, the ultimate is the appointment. They have really whittled back the numbers for SS from years past. There used to be three sessions, now there are only two. Another option to this is their sports camps. Not quite the same flavor, but still you get a feel for the campus and the activities.
Good Luck everyone!

You have some awesome offspring!!! Well done you. :thumb:

Good Luck everyone!

Also, there is a SAME (Society of American Military Engineers) Camp for those interested in Engineering (Civil). My son went instead of SS and had a lot of fun. For further information check out http://samecamps.org/. You need to be sponsored by a local SAME post. They will cover your airfare and 1/2 of the registration fee. If you do not have a local post or they are already sponsoring someone, contact the camp registrar (Erin) and she will work to find you a sponsor. Great program in Colorado Springs, CO.

I was just going on with what I read in the email they sent us.
Did they send you an e-mail? I never got one about them pushing the date back... I found out from checking the SS page and it said that they were making the final decision by the 21st, not the 15th.

Ops no I went back and looked and it wasn't the USAFA who sent me that email, just a friend currently attending the Air Force Academy.

I agree with kinnem's position that sequestration is impacting the results.

All areas within AETC could be impacted by sequestration. There will be substantial cuts to funding for national advertising for recruiting and commissioning programs such as ROTC. Professional Military Education and Readiness training quotas will be reduced. Advanced pilot and instructor training courses will be curtailed beginning April 1 in order to protect initial flying training, which is expected to stand down in late August or early September. If Congress fails to act and the automatic cuts are enacted, AETC will start implementing actions as soon as March 1.

If you look on other forums everyone is now discussing the real impact of sequestration on not only the govt., the AD world, but also the SAs and ROTC programs.

It is all about dollars and cents plus prioritization of the needs of the AF. SLS would IMPHO rank at the very, very, very bottom. The costs are high, and the return on the investment is low compared to even AFROTC SUmmer Field Training (SFT) SFT is for AFROTC cadets in the system as a rising jr. in college. It is @4 weeks. They would be entering AD in 2 yrs, and if contracted they have signed their papers...no turning back.

It would be interesting to see the statistics of the percentage of cadets this yr that receive appointments, and the % that accept the appointment. Many kids will do all 3 summer programs at each SA. Hence, it is an ROI perspective from a fiscal perspective, especially when you are prepared to ground the Thunderbirds, and UPT training for a month because they need to cut 203K flight hours to save money.

I am not saying there will be no SLS, just thinking out loud that it may be the smallest number ever.

I am taking a guesstimate that the sequestration will also impact the paperwork side of things. Many of the admin. depts have GS employees. They will be furloughed 1 day a week starting in April for 22 weeks to the end of Sept.

This is something to keep in mind as you start the PCQ process. The regional admissions personnel are not ADAF. They are contracted civilians that work for the AF as GS's. I am betting you will see a slow down there too.

It all will trickle down one way or another. Good luck, but if you don't get it, just realize that it is more probably due to the budget cuts than your application.

The thing you will realize is many people in the AF will say timing can be everything. It is true. Again, don't think that the AFA is going to look at this harshly if you don't get it, they already know the circumstances for the yr IF they cut the size of accepted.

Good luck. A yr from now this will all be a memory.

Summer Seminar Information

Actually, sequestration has nothing to do with the number of slots available for Summer Seminar this year. Summer Seminar is primarily staffed by current cadets. There are fewer cadets now due to SECAF directives, so USAFA can only run two sessions this year instead of three. That means there will be approximately 1/3 fewer selectees this year.

We also had a record number of applicants. Since we had more applicants than normal and can take 1/3 fewer than before, Admissions will have to turn away more applicants than we ever had (and many of those applicants will be very qualified).

This is the take-away... in no way should you be discouraged about your chances for an eventual appointment just because you didn't get a slot in Summer Seminar. They are, in fact, completely unrelated. If you applied and find out today that you didn't get in, then PLEASE plan on applying to USAFA for the class of 2018 when the application window opens on March 1.

Notifications for Summer Seminar are going out today (in fact they have already started). USAFA had a late report due to the storm but we expect all applicants to be notified one way or the other before close of business today.

In 2008, when our current firstie went to Summer Seminar, there were only 2 sessions. Then it went to three. Now back to two. As posters will tell you, things are always changing even when there is not a sequestration looming.
