Summer Seminar 2013!

Interesting.

I have to say I am chuckling inside a little bit because last week there was a thread by a poster/candidate about how it would be unethical for someone in the know to be a member here.

Christcorp and I both believed their rationale was incorrect. That anyone in the know would be professional enough to separate the professional/personal aspects. That they are beneficial to this site to stop the guessing games.

I am happy to see/read you here, and clarifying the fault of my own premise.

Now for the next question, if you can answer it, and I understand it could be classified, but you said SECAF directives, I am assuming you are meaning that the class sizes are smaller than yrs prior. If that is the case, than I would assume come next yr., the yr after that, and the yr after that it will remain at the same rate as this yr. The class size started reduction 2-3 yrs ago ??? They are expecting an all time low this yr for appointments. Using that as a guide, there will be several yrs of lower numbers, not just this yr.

I am curious where the funding will come from for it, from a sequestration perspective. I understand that it is FY13 and was planned, but so was the Thunderbird budget that is being cut.

I have no bone in the fight. No child applying. I am just curious when WP is bracing for 92 Million in cuts. Curious what the AFA is expecting to cut. I get it maybe they may have been proactive and already did the cuts, but still close to 100 MN is a lot of money to shave.

Pima,

Summer Seminar is self-supporting (financially) as the tuition covers all the direct costs. Hence budget cuts have a minimal impact of the program. The SECAF directive I'm referring to was to bring overall Cadet Wing size to 4000. Since there are a certain number of mandatory summer programs for each cadet, the pool available to run programs like Summer Seminar competes with the other optional programs available. Fewer cadets (in total) means fewer to go around. Therefore the cadre for Summer Seminar is reduced.

USAFA is taking just over 600 attendees this year.

As far as appointment offers for this year -- we are expecting there will be significantly MORE than last year. Last year was particularly bad because we had to meet the 4000 overall Wing Size limit by 1 October. That goal was obtained and the restrictions have eased somewhat. As far as looming budget cuts, USAFA is in much better shape than either USMA or USNA because we did draw down to 4000 cadets last year. USMA and USNA are still north of 4,500, I believe.

Of course, everything is subject to change.

Thanks.

I did not know SLS was NAF. (Non-Appropriated Funding).

Has anyone found out if they have been accepted or not yet?

Nope! Still patiently waiting though! Let me know of your results (if it's not too much to ask for) when we finally find out, good luck!

good luck to all of you! I've been checking my email avery 30 sec all morning :D

You should check your portal for the information. We did not get an email, but I just checked son's portal and he was not selected. I am sure one of the reasons is because his brother and sister attended. They use SS as a recruiting tool and are seeking individuals that might not ordinarily consider the Academy. Again this should not deter anyone from applying to the Academy for admission.

This message was posted by the USAFA admissions page in response to a question about when we will receive the email. Just wanted to pass this along. Good luck everyone!
"Summer Seminar emails have not be sent; we are correctly finalizing selections. The emails will be sent later this evening. For the most up to date information, check your Summmer Seminar status page."

I GOT IN!!!!

Congratulations! Your application has been reviewed by the USAFA Summer Seminar Program and we are happy to offer you a slot in this year's US Air Force Academy Summer Seminar program! To formally accept this offer, return to the application website at

Emails are being sent right now. Everyone should know their status within the next few minutes.

Just for anyone who didn't make it in, I suggest you apply for the Coast Guard Academy's AIM summer program. My brother did it last year and he said it was one of the most eye-opening experiences he's ever had. He got a major look at military life and the lifeof a cadet. Also, don't say you aren't going to do it just because you don't want to go to the Coast Guard Academy. My brother is currently a part of the class of 2016 at the Air Force, and he loves it so much.

Which date are you going to? We are thinking about session A, but my family and I are going to talk about it when my parents get off work.

Session A! I can't do Session B because Massachusett's Girls State starts on the 15th! Busy June for me!

Be sure to check you Spam folder and filter as that is where our DS found his two years ago and he almost missed the response time.

I concur with usafafam. DD attended four summer seminars last year (USAFA, West Point, Naval, and Coast Guard). She said Coast Guard was by far the most realistic of all four as they put them through a week of what Swab Summer is like. The others were enjoyable, just more of a recruiting tool. DD has recently accepted her appointment for the Class of 2017 at USCGA!

It says I got put on the wait list. What are the chances of me getting in then?
