Summer Seminar 2014

How do you ask for one?

If you have not been offered a CVW after filling out the pre-app/app for NASS, you may have to wait until you are given a candidate number and your application is opened up. CVWs are offered during the Fall and Spring semesters. Candidates from the class of 2018 may still be doing CVWs now through May, so space is limited. From the website:

"CVW is offered by invitation only throughout the academic year. Invitations are largely based on the level of completion of your application."

In some cases those who fill out the application will not be given a candidate number, based on gpa/ACT/SAT, etc.

I have not applied to SS yet because I was going to wait for the results of my first ACT, the February ACT. However, I have recently read that it is best I submit my application then send my scores in when I receive them. I am going to apply today. I am interested in a CVW. Were most CVWs offered to those who applied as soon as the application opened in January because they showed immediate interest, or do I still have a good shot at one?

It appears that you are not required to submit ACT/SAT scores for NASS (unlike USMA SLE), so I would suggest you send in your application and then submit your Feb ACT scores when you receive them. CVWs will be offered to those candidates deemed competitive based on their NASS application. If you do not receive a CVW now, just wait until you are given a candidate # and your USNA application opens up. It could be that Admissions is waiting to see more information from you. I don't know the numbers but I would assume that the majority of candidates that get or do a CVW go in the Fall/Spring of their senior year, not the Spring of their junior year. You are not behind if you do not get one now. You have a long road ahead if you are applying to any of the SAs, but it's good to be getting an early start. Good luck!

From my understanding (Admissions FB page) the Spring CVW spots are filled.

Good luck to all!

The same thing happened to me
I applied for NASS on Jan 16th
And I received an email inviting me to The Academy's CVW and I did accept so I plan to go to both the CVW and NASS and my CVW is April 24th-26th and I'm from Indiana.

For those who were accepted, did you receive any paperwork in the mail or did you only receive an email?

Notification for NASS is via email. Within that email are links for required documents and online payment. Documents are to be submitted back electronically via email.

Hey,
You can request a CVW from a BGO if he/she feels you're qualified if you do not get invited. This is what I read on the invited page so you might want to talk to someone who knows for sure. They are still sending out invites and I got mine a week ago so dont stress. And for anyone upset about getting a CVW but no NASS check your email, cuz I just got mine. Gonna be a busy summer.

We live in the Washington, DC area and my son is very interested in attending SS to get more of the classroom experience. He applied a week ago for Session 3only (which starts the day after school ends). He has a 31 ACT and 4.3 GPA and is a recruited athlete (but not yet "blue chip").

Does anyone have a sense of whether these two strikes against his application for SS (geographic proximity and past exposure to USNA via the coach and a visit) are deal-breakers?

Thanks in advance.

When did you apply? Just trying to get an idea of when I'll hear back.

It's not necessarily first applied - first accepted. There are many factors taken into consideration, including state/district, diversity and your overall application. Be patient...

Can anyone confirm or deny that for part of the NASS application, there was an essay portion that needed to be completed (besides the brief personal statement)? I have talked to several applicants who claim that there was an essay portion, but nowhere on the application did I see an essay prompt/place to write it.

Very true! Two years ago, my DS applied for NASS around March 10 and received acceptance notification on March 22. He applied very late in the cycle and had not taken SAT or ACT yet (only reported his PSAT score), but he still got in to NASS. He is a a plebe at USNA this year.

This year, my DD applied to NASS shortly after the application opened and she is still waiting to hear back (although she got the CVW invite a couple days after submitting application). We are wondering if she is less likely to get NASS acceptance since she already has a MID sib (and we are NOT from an under-represented area, as we are in San Diego).

Does anybody know if USNA typically issues the same sweats/shirts/shorts, etc. every year for NASS? Our DD attended last year and our DS was selected to go this summer. If they are the same, he could bring some of her old stuff with him to have some fresher garb to wear, once the stuff he gets issued there gets disgusting earlier in the week. Of course this question is coming from a mom and I'm sure DS wouldn't care if he stinks when he is there!
