Summer Seminar Opens Tomorrow! + Question

Thanks!

Thanks so much for your advice! I went ahead and submitted my application without the information. I realize now that was probably not the smartest thing to do :( After visiting the Academy over the summer and seeing how AWESOME it was, I jumped at the chance to finally start the process. Hopefully this Summer Seminar application and all subsequent applications processes will work out for the best :)

I'm sure it will brother! I realize how the jumpiness can get to you. I'm a little anxious about hitting that nice looking 'Submit to USAFA' button. Haha! But listen, your PSATs are VERY good looking. Don't regret it! And if you really want to change the scores, its not too late! You can mail them a hard copy of what you would like to change, and it will happen! I'm sure it will work out for the best. Keep me posted brother!

Hey bro, I don't see any problem with you submitting your application early. All the applications go into a pool, so the longer yours is in, the better; Your name will be seen over and over because they cycle packets, ones that weren't initially accepted go back to the bottom, and could potentially be reviewed numerous times. You can always update it if they aren't satisfied as it is, haha. Best of luck!

I hope so! Mine says the same thing and I'm getting super anxious, haha. I'm seeing all these "accepted" posts and it's driven me nuts that mine doesn't even appear to have been processed yet :p . Fingers crossed man, I'm sure well be fine!

Guys, remember, this is very odd for the Air Force Academy. The application CLOSES on February 28. Do not get anxious and haughty in thinking that your application is already SUPPOSED to have been processed. Be patient everyone...

Applications are accepted on a rolling bases. Just because the application period closes in February doesn't mean they will still be accepting applicants. I don't think anyone said they thought their applications were "SUPPOSED" to have been reviewed, I mearly inferred that I was excited that the process is underway. I think you have some preconceived notion that you are an expert on all things USAFA, when in reality, we are all new at this. We understand that results don't usually come overnight, and we aren't demanding immediate results, so chill down with your words of wisdom bro, you're coming on a little too strong.

We are all excited my good friend. I hope you realize, however, that I was generalizing everyone's comments. There have been people who have addressed this forum thread with questions and anxiety-based feelings due to the fact that their peers and friends were receiving acceptance letters yet they were not. I am merely trying to help my "bros." I do not think your "preconceived notion that you are an expert on all things USAFA" was very mature nor appropriate. However, I apologize for presenting myself in that matter, as I sincerely did not mean it in that way. Thank you for correcting me however, constructive criticism is always helpful. Focus your efforts, rather, on making good first impressions and "chilling down" as you would say, on your accusations. I am merely trying to present information that I have gathered from interviews and letters with/from Air Force Academy Instructors, my ALO, my father , and my brother. Have a good day.

Boys, relax! I don't think coolbeans was being too preconsumptuous daniel, but you need to understand Caleb that he is just as excited as everyone else, and having not even submitted a packet yet is hard when others are already being accepted :) I think a lot of people on this thread may be getting a little irritated with your rash and defensive responses though Dan, not so much on this page, but perhaps the latter. Quoting slang doesn't make you sound smart either, it's just stupid!! Haha, I think you are both very valuable members to this forum, so keep up the good work. I just joined and I already have seen a lot of good things from both of you, but there is no need to get uptight, so I think "chilling down"(haha) is a wonderful idea!!! BTW, the real question I had is how vital is it that I haven't been in student government?? Much obliged.. <3!

AprilShowers,
The question on student government could depend on other factors. Like how many other EC's you have, what your SAT's are, leadership positions held and many other factors. My DS(2016), was not active in student government, but is an Eagle Scout, and captain of his swim team. DD also was not into student government and is a 2014 cadet. She had a superb GPA and SAT's. No one can find all the answers here. Sometimes you just have to do the best you can, in what you are already involved in. Only USAFA knows what they are looking for exactly. Also, my kids went to two different high schools even though they are only two years apart. DS got his appointment in November 2011. DD got her appointment May 2, 2010, she was wait listed. Always have another plan, but always try to follow your dreams.

Hey guys,
I'm new to the forum and I'm having a problem. I have my application all ready, however I'm hesitating to submit it. The reason for this is the PSAT. I just wanted to know how you guys approached this common problem and how you dealt with it. Should I go ahead and submit scores with the SAT, or should I wait for the PSAT.

Submit with the SAT then you can follow up and update your app when your PSAT scores come in.

why wait?

What is your reasoning for waiting for your more scores? I think they only need one set.

If I understand what I've read here in the past, the USAFA SS selection people are looking to maximize the geographic dispersement of those selected for the sessions. I think that test scores, while important, are secondary to where you are applying from in terms of success. Areas with large numbers of applicants will be harder to get a slot from than areas such as ours that don't have many applicants for the program.

I recall reading here that, statistically, it's more difficult to get a slot to the SS than an appointment, but for different reasons. I would definitely emphasize leadership and EC activities as well. My son had only had a couple of tests under his belt when he applied and they weren't spectacular scores but he did have very good Academics, EC's, Leadership, and Athletics. He received an offer about a month after he applied and had a ball.

Now's a good time to really improve in any categories that you feel you're lacking in in preparation for the actual USAFA Application process. Don't suddenly become the energizer bunny, just pick some activities you were already involved in (have a track record in) and maybe step up the pace a little. Just take advantage of what is available and particularly concentrate on Leadership activities. Not being selected for the SS won't hurt you at all for the real thing. It's better to have applied in fact I'm told.

Good luck!

Tomorrow will be a week since I applied for the Summer Seminar. The web page still says that my application has not been processed. I updated my application today but it still says "Last update: 12/1/11"...

Furthermore, I do not have my PSAT scores back. However, I do have my scores from last year. Should I update my application with my old scores? They are not super (V80, M56, W71), but maybe better than nothing.

Those are great scores my friend! Congratulations! Don't be worried! I hope you submit those! Best of luck!

Applicant (your application is under consideration)

I submitted my application to the summer seminar last night at around 11:30pm Eastern. Already my status has changed to "Applicant (your application is under consideration)" which I thought was pretty fast considering how many people on this forum said they applied Dec 1st and are still in the first phase (or were at the time of their posts). Does anyone know how long this consideration phase usually lasts for?

Also, should I contact my ALO before I hear back about whether or not I got accepted? Or since my application is already under consideration should I just wait to see what happens and then contact him after I find out?

And lastly, is it bad to frequently update your application? I keep remembering things that I forgot to put down for the questionnaire so I've gone back to edit it 3-4 times. Does it look bad to them if you go back and edit it that frequently?

By the way, I'm from Northern New Jersey.

Thanks to anyone who can answer these.

This June (2011), I attended SS and I've recently submitted my application to USAFA. To answer your first question, it depends on where you are from and how many others are applying from that area. SS works in the same way as academy admissions in that the regions are assigned to regional officers who take care of most of the incoming applications. The amount of time it takes for an application status to change is subjective to the amount of applications from that area.

Secondly, I'm sure that contacting your ALO will be fine. Just tell him that you are checking to make sure your application is underway.

To answer your last question, I also updated by application frequently when I applied to SS. In fact, I was in the process of updating my application when I recieved the email containing my acceptence. :shake: If you keep remembering things you want to include in your application, go ahead and make good use of them.

I hope I've answered you questions. Please feel free to let me know if you have more.

about how long does it usually take to find out if you got in or not after the status on the website changes to "your application is under consideration?" just want to know how long I'm going to be stalking my inbox

Thanks a lot Talisman2 that was very helpful!

Interview

I have been contacted by an ALO for an interview as part of the SS admissions process. From what I have read on this thread and others, this is not necessarily standard procedure.

What I am wondering is if interviews are used in particularly competitive regions to winnow out applicants, or if the interview is an indication that I am borderline for acceptance to SS or on some sort of wait list.

Also, should I prepare for this interview the way I would for the actual USAFA admissions interview?

Despite receiving an email informing that I need to schedule an interview, my application status on the web page remains "Application Submitted (your application has not yet been processed by USAFA)"
