Summer Seminar

This is what really jumped out at me. Do you know far a positive evaluation of our performance at SS would go at the selection board?

Thanks for answering so many questions! I'll be at Session C, hope to meet you! My name is Shawn ^^ by the way :thumb:

From what I saw when I went last year, they didn't really note who was doing "really well." Don't worry about that, just enjoy yourself and don't do anything stupid that would get you sent home.

I didn't mean to limit this to only Cadet Candidates being able to ask questions. (I should have been more clear) If parents have any questions as far as what we are doing on a day-to-day basis or anything in general, you are more than welcome to ask me on this thread as well or send me a PM.

Sorry about the confusion.

2) I know that at AFASS the CFA does not count but is there anything that does go on your record, such as an evaluation?

Wait so the CFA at AFASS doesn't count for official results???

Nope, it's also not conducted like the standard cfa, and the altitude has an effect on scores

No, it doesn't count. When my son went to SS last year, they practiced it, got advice on how to improve (bball throw esp.), but I don't think ever did it start to finish, timed like you will have to do for your official CFA. And quite honestly, I think most kids there were probably glad that they had the rest of the summer to work on improving. Remember, at the AFA, you are at an altitude that most applicants aren't used to, so efforts/times will not be what you normally might do. I know for my son, his mile time was about 15-20 seconds slower than usual--only being there a few days doesn't give a body time to adjust to the lower level of oxygen you will encounter. And remember, there is no rush to get it done in June. Take the time to work on every aspect so that you can complete the CFA by July/August and hopefully max out as many parts of it as possible.

Hey so I'm going to the seminar on Monday and I'm not near as physically fit as I need to be how is that going to affect me this week?

It will inspire you

Hopefully you'll be motivated to get in great shape over the summer so you max out the fitness test. Take it from an old guy, getting in shape will never be easier for you than it is now. Good luck!

I've been working alot over the past two months and I hit 40 push ups, 60 sit ups, and a 11 sec shuttle run. My mile run is really slow cuz I'm still dealing with a messed up tendon from dancing and I still can't get any pull ups. By the way I'm a female.

You will be challenged physically throughout the week. The CFA during the summer seminar is more to show you how the test is conducted, to show you the proper form of each exercise, and to give you an idea of taking any kind of PT test here at altitude.

Don't worry about failing the CFA but you definitely want to give it your all to see where you stand. Work out to try to hit the max for each exercise when you do take the CFA back home. Good luck and hope to see you here!

Hi again, I would love to hear any reflections you have on how the first week went. :) Do the same cadre run all three weeks? Out of curiosity- what would the cadre with free time do over the weekend, now that school is over?

The one other thing I am wondering about personally is I am not a candidate for class of 2016, but class of 2017. Would you foresee that as affecting anything? Thanks

The first week was a blast! I had a fantastic group of kids. I really do believe I have them a new perspective of this place, more than any website online. Some of my kids now know that this place isn't for them which is perfectly fine. Just because you come to summer seminar doesn't mean your ultimate goal in life is to come here. If you find out that this place isn't for you, that is just as good as someone confirming that this place is for them. The first week is rough for the cadre because it's the first run-through with the schedule. The 2nd and 3rd sessions will run much more smoothly because we make tweaks to the schedule according to the feedback given to the upper chain after the 1st session.

Yes, the same cadre run all three weeks.

Cadre more or less do what they please on the weekends as long as there are no military duties to be missed. This may include going clubbing here in the springs or in Denver, driving up to Pike's Peak, going out to watch movies, going to their sponsor's house to just get away, cruising around on the windy roads of the mountains, or even going to parties up at UC at Boulder  , pretty much anything they want to do as long as it is within the 150 mile radius of the Academy.

When you say affecting anything, what are you referring to? The application for the summer seminar will be the same for you. It may be slightly more difficult for you to get an appointment for the class of 2017 simply because the AF and AFA are downsizing. However, the exact same merits will still be considered in the same fashion.

Any more questions?

Thanks for answering! I hope whatever cadre I get assigned are as great at answering questions as you because I always seem to have alot. :thumb:

I simply meant in terms of the SS week itself. Everyone else I assume would be Class of 2016, so I just didn't know if my being different on that level would affect anything about the week. I am guessing it would not, but, for example, I am not even sure if I have an academy file open. I guess applying to SS opens your file but I got a letter in the mail saying that I was not eligible for class of 2016, please reopen an application next year. Just trying to think if any problems would arise from that.

Running?

I'm a distance runner, and would like to get some mileage in during SS. I am curious how often and far we get to run while there? I understand the schedule's going to be pretty packed, and I won't be beaten up about if I don't get to run much. Thanks!

Absolutely no problems will arise nor will your week be any different.

You won't be able to get much mileage in at all for a distance runner. You will have organized PT runs but those are nowhere near long enough for a distance runner and for those runs you will be going together as an element.

You'll be doin indian sprints around the terrazo or Tzo. It seems like maybe 1.5-2 miles a day if I remember. Just my personal estimate we were never told anything.

I wanted to ask what should someone going to the summer seminar wear going to the Academy and on the airplane? Also, is there any free time at the seminar to purchase items or is every aspect of the day regimented for activity?

Wear whatever you want. Just use good judgement. No club clothes. If you arrive on an earlyish flight, they may let you go to a store. I didn't get to do that.

Khaki's and a nice shirt will be fine. It's up to you. The day you arrive, if you arrive early enough, there will be time for you to go to our Cadet Store and buy food, clothes, and souvenirs.

Also, as another cadre for SS, I've found/made the time to take my element to the Visitor Center for a short time.
