Summer Seminar

Not to conflict the above poster, but our son went to Summer Seminar last summer and never was contacted about it prior to acceptance or interviewed about summer seminar. Just did the application online and got the acceptance letter. The ALO did call us and let us know about Summer Seminar acceptance though before the letter came. I did not know at the time that summer seminar was so selective in the number of students they take. But I definitely think it is a plus for your file - our son got LOA Oct. 14 for class of 2013.

I was told that for many SS applicants, it's more competitive than the actual Academy, because there is only what is on paper. ie no cfa, essays, teacher recommendations, ALO interview, etc. I don't remember having an ALO interview for SS either, but we did have long conversations over the phone, so I'm not sure if that counted.

OK so my situation is that my GPA is halfway-decent right now, but after the second quarter ends, it's going to go up because I've been doing better in school this year than in past years. I'm really well qualified otherwise, in community and leadership aspects as well as sports. I was wondering-should I wait until the end of January (after first semester ends/mid-terms and much closer to the 28 February deadline) to apply because of the GPA or or should I apply now? I'm verrrry worried about this.

This is my theory-- the longer you wait for SS, the more competitive it becomes..

I would wait until more competitive grades. I think that, based on our experience, is still plenty early for your application.

Also, if you are not scheduled to go to Boys/Girls State next summer then talk to your counselor about who to contact to try to go. That is one of the specific questions it ask if you have done or plan to do.

You can log back into the summer seminar application any time before Feb 28 using your social security number and birthdate, then update any information on your application, including test scores, class rank, GPA, and resume. From what I've heard, it is better to apply sooner than later.

By that you mean after you submit the application or before? I know you can go and update it if it isn't finished but I'm confused as to what you mean.

I already submitted my application, but will still let me go back to the status page and update it.

I have 2 questions about the applications: first I am homeschooled and the only one in my class does any one know what I should do for the class rank? and second it says to put down an unwaited GPA wat is an unwaited GPA?

thanks

...it says to put down an unwaited GPA wat is an unwaited GPA?

thanks

I don't know the home-schooled class ranking system, but an unweighted GPA is the standard, 4.0 scale GPA. In other words, honors, AP, IB, etc. courses are on the same 4.0 scale, or not weighted compared to normal high school courses.

It says on the SS app. to put 1/1 for class rank if you are homeschooled. Hope this helps!

I wonder if you are home schooled with your brother and sister if you should write 1/3. Sorry, just had to say it. later... mike....

Hey,
How much does the summer seminar help you in regards to getting into the Academy? What percentage of summer seminar participants get accepted into the Academy?

Thanks,
Matt (SS 2008)

I believe that it's pretty much whoever still wants to go to the Academy, will. I think the percentage is somewhere arout 60-70%

Some say that SS is more competitive than the Academy, because there are less spots for SS. Idk that's just what I heard. I did not get accepted to SS but I didnt give up I'm just working hard trying to get an appointment :D
