Summer Seminar

Just a quick addition. I never went to SS, while it helps, its certainly not necessary.

I believe that it's pretty much whoever still wants to go to the Academy, will. I think the percentage is somewhere arout 60-70%

When I was at SS, I was told, casually, that only like 20% of participants make it to the USAFA, but over 80% will make it to one of the service academies. But I don't think this wasn't like an official count or statistic, only an estimation.

those stats where what we were told at SS, so it might change from year to year.

Summer Seminar primarily looks at academics. So SS admissions favors the academically inclined moreso than the actual admissions process.

I just wanted to add... my daughter was one of two to be accepted to Summer Seminar from our state.. we happened to run into the guy during our Senator interviews and I said.. so are you looking for a USAFA appointment? He said.. definately not.. he wanted West Point. I asked if he attened that summer seminar.. he had... also Annapolis. Many of the kids went to 2 or more. I did not even know that WP and Annapolis had summer seminars at the time we signed up for USAFA. Our Liason officer even said to us.. you can apply, but will probably not get in, but it looks good that you applied, because it shows interest. She just happened to get lucky enough to be chosen.
I guess my point is.. there are only about 700 slots.. and you figure some will not make it through Dodmerb (medical), some will choose other academies, some decide it is not for them.. and for others.. that air is just too thin up there. So if you get in that is great.. it helps, but intent and desire help as well.. so show them you wanted to go. If you get in.. remember to bring chap stick... lots of chap stick.

Yes, I agree. The number of slots are very low, and the lips were killing me by the fourth day. However, I don't think SS should be the main determining factor in choosing service academies, because it's ultimately what you do after graduation that you want to look at. That's why I only applied to the USAFA. But I guess the atmosphere and environment of the academies should still be taken into consideration, but just not the main consideration.

I submitted my SS application the day it came out and have been checking the status page almost daily (I'm a little bit too excited I think ). Today my status changed. It changed from

Applicant (your application has not been reviewed) to
Applicant (your application is under consideration).

It also has the names and numbers of my USAFA counselor and my ALO. Has this happened to anyone else?

They definitely did it differently last year - I don't remember the status page. But then maybe I just wasn't paying attention. Nonetheless, I was just as excited as you probably are about SS, and that's all I talked about as it got closer and closer to June. If you are academically sound, then you should not worry about not getting in, but after you get in, it's a great feeling, almost as great as getting the actual appointment. I didn't get the letter of acceptance until mid-March, because the admissions people are extremely busy in the spring processing appointments, nominations, applications, review boards, etc. Bottom line, don't worry. Worrying won't help a thing, so think positively and have this as something to look forward to in your stressful Junior year.

Whoa, I just checked on one of the USAFA's admissions websites and discovered that there are three sessions for SS this year! It has always been two. Applicants are in luck, because this will definitely knock down the competitiveness, which how it should be, because it is a great opportunity for prospective candidates to see what cadet life is like.

...and the lips were killing me by the fourth day.

Lucky, I got a nosebleed during Doolie for a Day. Lucky for me we were in one of the squadron common rooms, so all I had to do was get my cadre to escort me to the nearest bathroom.

So did I... while I was in the bathroom lol are you going to be in class of 2013?

Is there certain grade you have to be to attend the Summer Seminars. I am a sophmore right now, can I attend it? (if I get accepted)

You have to be an incoming Senior. So no you may not attend this year.

you attend the summer between junior and senior year, you apply the previous january or february. Good luck and keep up the interest!

I hope so. All I need to do is finish/turn in my writing samples, and get the CFA scores that I want.

Damm.. ok thanks

Find out who your USAFA ALO is and let them know NOW that you're interested in the summer seminar...and keep in touch with them.

Trust me, come time, they'll call you to make certain you've applied!!!
