summer seminar

Ahh, I wish I could go to the summer seminar. Unfortunately, all three sessions start before my last day of school! On the bright side, at least.. I don't have to pay $300-ish this summer :D

Summer Seminar - USCGA/USAFA

My son attended both Summer Seminar programs in 2009. He thought both sessions were fabulous. I would urge anyone thinking about these sessions to not forget about the USCGA. I know my son came back from USCGA with a new found respect for their program! I agree with Luigi! :thumb::smile:

I went to AFA SS and missed the last few days of school for it. It is definitely worth attending if possible because you learn a lot... about the school, the Air Force, the environment. I know that some of the kids I went with ended up deciding that a service academy was not for them. I'm not saying this may be your thought, but it really helps in the decision making process.

Also, if you do end up missing school, most of your teachers should be understanding... at least mine were. I was able to take my finals with the seniors a week early, so missing the last week of school was ok for me (at my school you only have to come in to take your tests, no full school days).

coffeecup, that was my DS's experience at the NASS, missed some school but the teachers were very understanding (and quite excited for him), and it solidified the quest. And, I'm told, you can learn a lot about yourself too.

Best of luck to all on your applications.

I was thinking about doing that, missing the last week of school. But my school's schedule is tightly run during the last days of school and I think it's too much to miss (projects, finals, graduation ceremony performance w/ orchestra and band). Plus the seniors would take their finals only a couple days before graduation, so I would still miss that.

I thought maybe I could apply to the Naval Academy's summer seminar, I'm still thinking about it. It's just that the AFA is where I want to go, but at least I'll get a feel of service academy life if I happened to get into NASS. Is there anything wrong with that?

I highly recommend attending ss, even if you are required to miss school. It is a great opportunity to explore the school. For me, I did the first session which started on wenseday. I ended up only missing 3 days of school, which allowed me to prepare for finals the following week. (finals being the week after that) You could also try to get the homework ahead of time and try to work it out before ss. Plus with ap classes, the work load was quite minimal after the ap test.

Basically, move things around. Its worth it!

I also recommend doing a SS and missing school if you have to. My son did NASS first, then WP and AF SS. He thought by far that NASS was the best program, and AF is also his first choice. The AF program is really short - really only 3 days since the first day is arrival and the last day they could have flights home as early as 6am. They did a lot of cool stuff at NASS - going to DC to see the Marine Band and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Sea Trials, etc. WP and AF's seemed to be more just focuing on academy life in general. I'd say if that works better, go to NASS to get the academy experience. Then later plan a trip to AF if you haven't been there before just to make sure it's what you want. If you're fairly sure, you can wait and do orientation in April before you have to accept one academy or the other next year!

However, my son missed the last full week of school and finals week to do the various SS. One thing to consider is that if you're in AP classes, they pretty much (around here at least) wrap up when the exam is over early/mid May. So since he had 3 AP classes, plus a college class (which ended mid May), and his LA teacher left the last week to go grade AP exams so they had that exam early - it really ended up with Spanish being the only "true" exam he missed! Check into it - you may find your school is very willing to work with you.

Well maybe it's not so impossible then. Perhaps I could check into one of the earlier sessions so I won't miss the more important part of school at the end of the year. Thanks a lot everybody, I'll definitely look into it now!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with attending NASS over AFA SS. However there are quite some differences. If I were you, I would apply to both now... I got accepted to AFA SS but not NASS (didn't apply to WP SLS). You don't have to accept to go if you do get accepted, but that way it will give you more options. Things could change from now to March (or whenever payment is due), and you don't want to regret not applying. Ask your principal or guidance counselor what they think about you attending. Also, don't get discouraged if you don't happen to get accepted. I didn't get accepted to NASS and barely AFA- I was wait listed and a mishap with my phone number (fyi don't enter your phone number wrong ) and got the 2nd to last spot!. However now I am waiting to hear if I received an appointment to WP because I got a principal nom. While SS is a great experience, it has no effect on admission to the academies.

SOLD! Applying to SS on Saturday (lots of homework the rest of the week:cool:)

And will apply to NASS when it opens. That's totally right, I should at least apply to keep options open. Thanks a lot!

Plus, before I was afraid that if I was accepted to the AFA summer seminar and it turned out that I couldn't go, I was afraid there would be a problem getting out of it or something. But apparently, I have a while to get everything straight before I decide to accept the spot at SS right?

Thanks again!! I really appreciate the advice!

Yes!! I'm glad I helped you . You are right: if you do get accepted, you can always reject if any conflicts come up. So it is definitely worth applying. Many people apply to NASS, SLS, and USAFA SS, get accepted to all of them and since the sessions overlap have to choose which ones they want to attend and which to decline. Best of Luck!

How much do test scores count four the Summer Seminar? Like the PSAT or ACT?

And then click on "Application".

However, if you're not currently a junior (ie you're a sophomore trying to look for next year), you won't be able to get into the application itself. If you have any specific questions, let me know because my son is going to be applying once he gets his ACT scores back the end of the month and I can look at it all for anyone wondering then.

Last year the first notifications came out around January 20th or so. My son was out visiting the academy January 12/13th and at that point they told him nothing had been sent out yet. He saw the first people reporting acceptance the following weekend on the boards here. So I wouldn't expect anything until after the first of the year, as a minimum!

I missed my last week of school to attend SS, and it was well worth it!! Your principal and teachers will have notice months ahead of time, so that should help. Mine let me take finals early. I attended USAFA and USMA and it was an awesome experience that helped me know that a SA is where I want to be. As others pointed out you can always decline it if you can't go.
