Hello everyone,

I was nominated twice by multiple adults in my school for Georgia State's Governor's Honors Program. The program is completely federally funded, competitive, and consists of a four-week intensive study in your major during the summer. I was nominated for mathematics and chemistry, which I understand would be attractive to the Naval Academy and possible nomination sources. However, the program takes place during the Naval Academy's summer STEM camp, which I was planning to apply for. I have heard the camp is a feeder for the academy from multiple people, but of course USNA says it is not. I consulted a teacher who is knowledgeable of the service academies, and she advised me to go for the Summer STEM camp. Furthermore, the GHP applications are due very soon, and to complete my application I must sign a commitment to the program in the event I am chosen. How should I proceed?

Go to the Georgia State Governor's Honors Program. Everyone I have talked to has said that STEM has no impact on your application other than you having physically been at the Academy; however, even if it does, a lot of kids will have that on their application... very few will have the Georgia State Governor's Honors Program. (I do not know why I have been using ellipses so much recently...)

Go to the state program. The Academies don't get anything other than the fact that you went to the STEM camp. It's a good thing, but it sounds like you have the opportunity to do something better

I agree, go to the Georgia camp. STEM camp is a great program at USNA but it won't impact your admissions to USNA. Apply for summer seminar next year. The state program could add points to your WCS, especially if you earn any recognition or if leadership opportunities are available while there.

I'm going to echo what everyone else has said: go to the Georgia Camp. I'm just a candidate but I can tell you that you'll have plenty of time to get your name out there to the academy and interact with midshipmen and check out Annapolis at NASS. Those are big reasons why NASS exists. I doubt the academy knows if you went to STEM but they definitely know if you went to NASS. Nominating sources have asked me if I've gone to NASS but not if I went to STEM. Make the choice that you think will be best for you but I have to say that the Georgia program seems like an amazing opportunity and as someone else said, a lot of kids will go to STEM but certainly not many will have done what you could do.

Go to the Georgia Camp. Apply to the STEM camp as back up in case you don't get in the Georgia Camp. Best wishes.
