Sunday phone calls

Heard from Son in Third Company

Finally got the call in Washington State. Son says he is fine, though he says Third Company has the flu running through it so they are quarantined. Did not have time to get details on what that means. He did say they had tested and so far only found influenza A. He loves the waterfront, and sounded tired, but happy to be there. The five minutes was interrupted when cell phone dropped off, but he was able to call back. DI in the background was heard counting down the minutes and then the seconds. It ended all to fast! Now we are counting down until next Sunday's call. Hope everyone waiting hears soon.

No band company call from my son. I was beginning to wonder if BndCo had the flu, but I guess not. Glad to hear so many people are happy to hear from their cherubs.

My son is in 4th company and said that he was feeling icky and that the flu was all over the place. I hope he is just achey and tired from the pt. Time alone will tell. now we have something else to worry about.

Just heard from my boy! He's doing okay but hardly anytime to talk! Seems the 5 minutes was more like 1 or 2. It was so good to hear his voice, though hoarse, (I was prepared for that). He said this is the best his voice has been since starting indoc!

He'd like us to send him a small travel iron and choc chip cookies are always a hit! :thumb:

So take heart band parents your calls are a comin'

Ya cleaning can soothe the nerves. I'm still feeling shaky but there is plenty more housework to do around here LOL. Looked at the cell phone and it was 5 min. but that was the fastest 5 min. of my life! His too I suspect

Just got off the phone with our son. He sounded SO good! :thumb:Been on the water several times in different boats, going near North Brother Island where Typhoid Mary (google her) was. He likes the food, has 1 roommate, is now the snare drummer and in the color guard. Sounds like he really likes it there. Can't wait to talk to him next week. Grand Prairie Texas, my son borrowed your phone, (2727) thanks a million. I wonder if they are roommates. Unless of course it's a girl!!LOL:biggrin:

wrestling

Hey,

Enjoyed your post...talked to my son....feel 100% better! My son is wrestling too. He's from FL and is a FHSAA State wrestler....still waiting to hear though because he was recruited for wrestling and football so not sure how they work that with sea time. ??? Glad you heard from your son. I started a group for USMMA 2013 Family and Friends at www.facebook.com search USMMA and it is the first one that pops up, about 50 parents have joined, posted pix etc....Take care!

From what I understand, you go to sea based on when you play your sports. Pretty soon, our kids will start hearing how A split is better than B and how B is better than A. I see it as what my young adult wants. As long as he has as much info to make a well informed decision.....and that will continue the rest of our young adults' lives- getting info, making a decision based on it and repeat , repeat.... If you can find a parent in your state who has a 3rd, 2nd & 1st yr, then you can fire away! Wow, that's awesome your son was recruited! and he wrestles and plays football.

It's 5:10 CST and still waiting for the call. DS is in 3rd Co and we hope he isn't sick

As soon as I posted my previous comment DS son called!! He's doing very good and HAPPY. He doesn't need anthing yet but one letter a day, he's missing his big sister. 3rd company is on quarantine and can't eat with others, he doing well though. Can't wait until next week....

Son just called at around 6:20. He too was horse. He is in Third Co. and said the entire company is quarantined due to the flu. They have had limited time at the waterfront. I ask how is it?.... he said do you want it straight and I said yes...he said it is terrible......I said it is supposed to be. He said he could do it and knew it would all be worth it. Harder physically than he thought (he said I was right and he should have listened more closely to the old man) He sounded excited to speak with us, but was not very talkative. He likes his roommate and that the roommate is/has been very helpful because he knows quite a bit about the place. I think he said his name was Downing.

Handy item for Parents Weekend, cotton sleepingbag liner. I'd never heard of one, but it's warm enough for most of the year (their bunks are near top of ceiling), easy to clean, and wads up/stores very compactly.
Works great, as they all sleep on TOP of their racks.
You can find them at any camping store/outdoor center/BedBathBeyond near you (BB&B often has the sheet stays as well).

It's 6:46 Eastern time and I still haven't received a call from my son in Second Company. Is anyone still receiving calls? Should I give up yet? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Way to go dad!!! What a compliment your son gave you (regarding how he should have listened to you more)! Now begins the, what I think to be, the next phase of their lives...."Maybe they were right" and digging deep for all the wisdom they've learned throughout their lives through stories, experiences, meeting people, grandparents, etc........

Skmarm, it will come. They won't leave anyone out. I think they are just finishing up with dinner. Hang in there. Just think after next Sunday's call we can skype them on Monday. Remember to set a time with your young adult before Sunday's call is over!!! If you can't skype, you should be able to email or IM!!

The biggest issue when scheduling sea year is sports. Unfortunately for your son he will likely have to make a decision for 3rd and 2nd class years as to which is more important: football or wrestling. It will be tough as if he chooses wrestling he would pretty much miss the entire football season those two years. If he picks football he may (big "may" there) be able to catch part of the first of wrestling season, but I doubt it.

It can happen though, we've had people do it before. Just something he'll have to consider towards the end of this year.
