SUNY Maritime College

My DD got through the her first semester this fall participating in NROTC and varsity soccer. This required carrying 21 credits including the required naval science course + lab. Very rigorous. She loves Maritime. If anything the participation on the team helped. She's surrounded by upper class females who have been through it and who took her under their wings. Her grades were not stellar, but this had more to do with the transition than the workload. She got through. She's excited to go back now after the holiday break and seems ready to hit the ground running. They tried to recruit her for lacrosse, but she says she would rather focus on academics... which is fine with me. She's pretty intense on the field and would be scary with a stick in her hand ;>)
Hello,
My son just got accepted to SUNY Maritime. He is calling tomorrow to get an application for the SSOP. Do you have any advice for us. I know you mentioned your daughter is doing well. Thank you so much

I will see if I can figure out how to send you a PM to provide info so your son can contact DD. She will be a good source of advice. Never too soon to start training for PFT!

Hi, new to the forums here. My son is a HS junior, had decided to enlist in the Navy and is now thinking he may want to go to college first and then serve in the Navy. He wants to be close to home, so I've been looking at SUNY Maritime. He is starting to apply for a NROTC scholarship and hopefully he'll be getting paperwork and application requirements together when school starts in September. Any hints, tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. He has been heavily involved in NJROTC in his high school and will be the Battalion Master Chief during his senior year. Thanks so much for any help

Do an overnight. You may have to apply first, and get accepted, but do the overnight. Like any program there are pluses and minuses to the school. We visited several times and I found the people very engaging. That said, you'll get much better advice and counsel from those who go there, or who have kids who go there. Our son went a different direction. One general piece of advice, apply early - regardless of which school your son is considering. There are other Maritime academies in that general neighborhood, including Mass Maritime and Maine Maritime. Most important, have your son visit the school during one of the general sessions that they have, but most importantly, lobby for and have him attend an overnight. He'll choose a school that is right for him. Good luck.
