Superintendent's Pin

Hornetguy et. al.,

When did promotion to 1LT and CAPT take on promotion line numbers? That would be the "not all on the same day" you describe.

At my last "look-see" all 1LT's were promoted on the same day, as were all CAPT selects. Only upon reaching selection for Field Grade (Major - Colonel) were you assigned a "line number" and that was what determined when you were actually allowed to pin-on the new grade.

When I was promoted to 1LT and CAPT, it was simply the anniversary of my commissioning to 2LT: 1 JUN 83 to 2LT, 1 JUN 85 to 1LT, 1 JUN 87 to Captain. Pin-on was that same day.

So...has it changed?

AFSC = Air Force Specialty Code. ENGLISH TRANSLATION: Your Job.

Flymom: I guess it's time to tell your daughter to have her friend take a NICE PICTURE of her all dressed up pretty and send you a picture. :)

mike.....

Ha! Christcorp, that's funny because these days, her definition of "dressing up pretty" means dressing up in anything BUT a uniform--even one with a pin! :)

Yea; I know what you mean. My son looks SO HANDSOME in his service dress. But as soon as he hits the door, it is off of him. But then again; I did the exact same thing. I think my mom and dad saw me in service dress twice in my life. Graduation and retirement. LOL!!!

Mine wont get within a mile of her uniform when she doesn't have to wear it. Congradulations Flymom it is a small list, and an elusive pin.:thumb:

So taking a tougher major doesn't factor into the BOM at all?

Well,,,, yes. A tougher major counts towards your BOM board. But it depends. I.e. If you have a major in Bio-Chemistry; but you are putting in for an AFSC (Job) in the Supply, Contracting, Financial, etc... type fields; then it doesn't affect it really at all. Then again; why would you take such a major if you didn't want to work in that field. On the other hand; if you major in History, that would mean more if you are competing with others who want to be a historian compared to someone with a major in Comp-Sci. The only one where the major is truly IFFY; is for Pilots. A linguist or Behavioral Science major can just as easily get a flying slot. But the aeronautical engineer major could expand into being a test pilot or similar positions. Later... mike...

Flymom: looks like we might be in the same boat about Spring Break. Found out NCAA championships are the first w/e of Spring Break, in California. Fencersmother is not very happy about this.

You're probably right, either I got wrong info, or I misconstrued the Major+ boards the same way as the LT/Capt boards. Tactical Nuke, need you're edit button powers!

The reason I asked is that in my nephew's ENJJPT class at Sheppard his neighbor that was in an ENJJPT class before him came over while we were visiting my nephew and talked to our son about the USAFA since he graduated from there. He said he took an easy major (Mgmt. specifically) because he wanted to have high grades for pilot slot. Of course, Mgmt. would drive my engineering minded son crazy but it easier majors have crossed his mind hearing that. But.. guess it worked for this young man as he is flight training on the F-22.

As I said; flying is the one big exception. But that's only half the class. What if your son doesn't want to be a pilot? What if WANTS to get into a science, engineering, telecommunications/IT, law, medical, etc... career???? If there are 50 cadets who want to work in telecommunications/IT; and there are only 20 slots; and 25 of the 50 cadets majored in SOME TYPE of technical degree; e.g. comp-sci, various engineering, etc... and the other 25 majored in Non-Technical degrees; e.g. history, english, behavioral science, Linguist, etc... who do you think the BOM is going to look at better?

Bottom line is; you major matters in what you are trying to do for a job after you graduate. Pilots again are a little different. All students get a Bachelors of Science degree. There are NO B.A. degrees. So, there is enough science, math, etc... in all degrees for certain jobs. Just that those with a major in that job will have a better chance of getting it. later... mike.....

A note on management, I have a friend that just wants med school and went management to make his grades easier. While he does fine, my impression from him, and taking the core class myself, is that its really easy to get a B, but VERY hard to get an A. Better odds for most considering the average GPA here is a 2.7. I've heard that Behavioral Science majors have the highest GPA chances of cadets.

No one shoud come here or choose a major for it to be easier, but some do.

superintendents pin

what % of cadets earn this pin each semester?

Hornet/ any current/past cadet, do you know anything about the political science program? How popular it is... All contingent of me getting in of course, but I am torn between engineering and poli sci. The strength of the AFAs engineering programs is well known and would be hard to pass up. At the same time, I feel like I have more interest in politics. It would be a tough decision.

Buffalo my daughter went to a High School that had an engineering program. If you had asked her two years ago what her major would be, Aero was on top. Earlier this year she declared Behavioral Science. She went from techie to fuzzy in 3 semesters. Doesn't matter what major it is they will all be challenging.

Jim,

The number of cadets who earn each pin varies from semester to semester. Here is the breakdown for the class of 2011 for the Fall 2008 term:

Total Class - 1127
Cadets on at least one list - 698
Dean's List - 374
Commandant's List - 533
Athletic Director's List - 260

Superintendent's List (All 3) - 100

Wow, Sup's pin is pretty elite then. Congrats to those who received it.

this not only means that getting to the list is competitive, but from the 1300+ cadets that accepted their appointments, only 1127 were left for the class 2011....wow

1127 graduating is actually pretty good, and high. It is not uncommon for the graduating class to be below 1000.

As for the breakdown; here is a PDF with every student in classes 2009-2012 who are on at least 1 list. It's a public list, so I assume it's ok to upload. You can do the math and figure out the percentages if you'd like. I got it from our Parent's Newsletter. I uploaded it onto one of my servers. Feel free to click the link and open it or save it. It's in a PDF. later.... mike.....
