In my state, family members of MOS who suffer a LOD death are eligible for a license plate that denotes that they are Survivors of the Shield. Today, I went to the 7-11 to pick-up a "dozen eggs" (LE will know) when I noticed that the only other car in the lot had this plate. I went in, made eye contact, acknowledged him, but didn't say anything. I was wearing a LE shirt, which he saw. I couldn't think of anything appropriate to say. It all happened so quickly. He was my age so his loss must have been to a younger family member. He nodded, but I couldn't bring myself to say what I felt. So I am saying it here. Thank you to all the families of members of LE who have lost and to the families of members of our armed forces who go in harm's way. You protect us 24/7, you are not forgotten by us on this forum & in our prayers.

I have ran into a few gold star plates. Every time I have seen them and their families I always approached them and thanked them for their families sacrifice. I would ask them if they had a minute to tell me about their loved one. Generally they have all been very happy to tell stories of their sons. Sometimes I had been to the same places as their loved ones. I have found them all to be very thankful that they were not forgotten and a chance to share happy memories.

As far as I know "Survivors of the Shield" is an organization dedicated to the families of fallen NYPD Officers. Although there are a great many Gold Star organizations I don't think this is one. They do deserve the same respect.
