Tardies....

spell check on this forum, which seems to randomly work, would be a friend to us all...:argue1:

To answer the original question, tardies will only be important if they are on the transcript and/or if you suspect one of your teachers will mention them in the LOR. You can request an unofficial copy to see if they are. If so, suggest you discuss this with your BGO. Don't make excuses, just explain what happened. As a BGO, I would follow up to ask you whether you just didn't "move fast enough" to get to class on time or . . . what? I would be looking for you to explain how you organize your time as time management is one of the key issues at USNA, especially for plebes. No need to respond here, just something to think about.

Also, wrt to the rec . . . the fact that USAFA does or doesn't do or consider something has no bearing on what USNA does or doesn't do. For the overwhelming majority of applicants, 2 teacher recs and the BGO rec are sufficient. The only time another rec will actually help is if that person can comment on some part of your life completely unknown to a teacher or BGO. So, if the football team is your main activity outside of class and isn't connected to your school . . . a letter from the coach might be useful.

The facts that someone submitted additional LOR(s) and was appointed may be related but in most cases are likely discrete. IOW, the candidate in most cases would have been appointed absent the extra letter. And a letter from a senior USN officer family friend who has known you forever is almost certainly having zero effect, other than to make the candidate and his/her parents feel better. Understand the desire to do everything possible to get in but in almost all cases, you're doing it based on your record, which includes the required LORs, and not b/c someone wrote an extra LOR.

Again...official guidance:

When considering an additional LOR...you need to ask yourself if you meet the above criteria. If the information being provided isn't going to shed new light (i.e. someone else reiterating how great you are)...don't send it in. Notice how Admissions said they already have enough information; sending in an additional LOR should be the EXCEPTION...not the rule!

Echoing bgo08, you only really want to submit an additional LOR from your coach if he can speak to a hardship you overcame or some exceptional contribution you made to the team or something else extraordinary that will give Admissions new information.
