So i got appointed a few weeks ago to usafa and am wondering, can i get a tattoo while im in high school right now? I want to get one on the upper forearm in the area by where they put the needle in to give blood. Would this interfere with wearing a uniform or something like that?

DO NOT DO IT!

That would be my advice. Wait until you're in Colorado, a member of the cadet wing, and THEN speak with the NCO and Officer in your squadron to learn the PRECISE rules/regulations/AFI's, etc.

Just a guess but they take blood in the crook of the elbow...that's BELOW the PT shirt sleeve...

Do NOT take the risk now.

alot of people have tattoos here all over the place. but yea id wait i guess to be on the safe side. why complicate things before hand...

i was wondering about the tattoo policy also. You said wait until youre in colorado, will fourth class cadets have the opportunity to do that?

Tattoos cannot be visible below the t-shirt sleeve.

Hey all!

The advice I was given by my local JAG (I have a bunch of AF folks that work for me in my AFRC role) was:

"Advise the member that their tattoos are NOT to show when wearing ANY uniform, to include the PT uniform. If they have questions, doubts, etc., have them come see us (you come to Colonel) and we'll go over the AFIT with them and help them to make a determination."

I accepted that as did my folks.

This is a HUGE cultural thing now...tattoos are no longer viewed negatively, BUT BUT BUT...the military is a little different from the "average" social "scene."

FYI...this was a couple of years ago...I realize Army has "relaxed" their requirements somewhat...but I wouldn't do ANYTHING to jeopardize the appointment...wait until you're a cadet THEN look into it!

Just my 75 cents worth.

some people do have tattoos on their forearms. I wouldn't tho

I'm pretty sure those with visible tatoos had to get waivers.

Steve's initial advice of:

"WAIT UNTIL YOU GET TO THE ACADEMY" is the best advice.

There isn't some special price going on currently; "Buy one get one free". If you want a tattoo, more power to you. But is there any reason whatsoever to risk your appointment because the information you received today, may NOT be up to date and/or accurate 3-4 month from now. Or maybe you interpreted something different.

If you're getting a tattoo for yourself; which is really the only reason you should ever get one; then your body will still be there in August/September when BCT is over and you're in school. You'll know the regulations. There will be no confusion. You'll be asking/speaking to your squadron commander, so there won't be any surprises or misunderstandings. That's the greatest thing about a tattoo. While it's pretty much permanent, it's not something that's life threatening and you have to get it today. It's not going off sale and it's going to cost a lot more later. You have time going for you. Definitely nothing wrong with a tattoo if that's what you want. But I wouldn't even think of doing anything between now and the end of BCT that could even possibly be misinterpreted or misunderstood. mike...
